An article review is both a summary and an evaluation of another writer's article. Teachers often assign article reviews to introduce students to the work of experts in the field. Experts also are often asked to review the work of other professionals. Understanding the main points and arguments of the article is essential for an accurate summation. Logical evaluation of the article's main theme, supporting arguments, and implications for further research is an important element of a review . Here are a few guidelines for writing an article review.

Education specialist Alexander Peterman recommends: "In the case of a review, your objective should be to reflect on the effectiveness of what has already been written, rather than writing to inform your audience about a subject."

How to Write an Article Review: Tips and Examples

article review notes

An article review format allows scholars or students to analyze and evaluate the work of other experts in a given field. Outside of the education system, experts often review the work of their peers for clarity, originality, and contribution to the discipline of study.

When answering the questions of what is an article review and how to write one, you must understand the depth of analysis and evaluation that your instructor is seeking.

What Is an Article Review

That is a type of professional paper writing which demands a high level of in-depth analysis and a well-structured presentation of arguments. It is a critical, constructive evaluation of literature in a particular field through summary, classification, analysis, and comparison.

If you write a scientific review, you have to use database searches to portray the research. Your primary goal is to summarize everything and present a clear understanding of the topic you’ve been working on.

Writing Involves:

Types of Review

There are few types of article reviews.

Journal Article Review

Much like all other reviews, a journal article review evaluates strengths and weaknesses of a publication. A qualified paper writer must provide the reader with an analysis and interpretation that demonstrates the article’s value.

Research Article Review

It differs from a journal article review by the way that it evaluates the research method used and holds that information in retrospect to analysis and critique.

Science Article Review

Scientific article review involves anything in the realm of science. Often, scientific publications include more information on the background that you can use to analyze the publication more comprehensively.

Formatting an Article Review

The format of the article should always adhere to the citation style required by your professor. If you’re not sure, seek clarification on the preferred format and ask him to clarify several other pointers to complete the formatting of an article review adequately.

How Many Publications Should You Review?

When you know the answers to these questions, you may start writing your assignment. Below are examples of MLA and APA formats, as those are the two most common citation styles.

Using the APA Format

Articles appear most commonly in academic journals, newspapers, and websites. If you write an article review in the APA format, you will need to write bibliographical entries for the sources you use:

Using MLA Format

The Pre-Writing Process

Facing this task for the first time can really get confusing and can leave you being unsure where to begin. To create a top-notch article review, start with a few preparatory steps. Here are the two main stages to get you started:

Step 1: Define the right organization for your review. Knowing the future setup of your paper will help you define how you should read the article. Here are the steps to follow:

Step 2: Move on and review the article. Here is a small and simple guide to help you do it right:

These three steps make up most of the prewriting process. After you are done with them, you can move on to writing your own review—and we are going to guide you through the writing process as well.

Organization in an assignment like this is of utmost importance. Before embarking on your writing process, you could outline your assignment or use an article review template to organize your thoughts more coherently.

Outline and Template

As you progress with reading your article, organize your thoughts into coherent sections in an outline. As you read, jot down important facts, contributions, or contradictions. Identify the shortcomings and strengths of your publication. Begin to map your outline accordingly.

If your professor does not want a summary section or a personal critique section, then you must alleviate those parts from your writing. Much like other assignments, an article review must contain an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. Thus you might consider dividing your outline according to these sections as well as subheadings within the body. If you find yourself troubled with the prewriting and the brainstorming process for this assignment, seek out a sample outline.

Your custom essay must contain these constituent parts:

Here is a guide with critique paper format from our research paper writing service on how to write a review paper:

steps-for-writing-artcle-review

Step 1: Write the Title.

First of all, you need to write a title that reflects the main focus of your work. Respectively, the title can be either interrogative, descriptive, or declarative.

Step 2: Cite the Article.

Next, create a proper citation for the reviewed article and input it following the title. At this step, the most important thing to keep in mind is the style of citation specified by your instructor in the requirements for the paper. For example, an article citation in the MLA style should look as follows:

Author’s last and first name. “The title of the article.” Journal’s title and issue(publication date): page(s). Print

Example: Abraham John. “The World of Dreams.” Virginia Quarterly 60.2(1991): 125-67. Print.

Step 3: Article Identification.

After your citation, you need to include the identification of your reviewed article:

All of this information should be included in the first paragraph of your paper.

Example: The report, “Poverty increases school drop-outs,” was written by Brian Faith – a Health officer – in 2000.

Step 4: Introduction.

Your organization in an assignment like this is of the utmost importance. Before embarking on your writing process, you should outline your assignment or use an article review template to organize your thoughts coherently.

Step 5: Summarize the Article.

Make a summary of the article by revisiting what the author has written about. Note any relevant facts and findings from the article. Include the author's conclusions in this section.

Step 6: Critique It.

Present the strengths and weaknesses you have found in the publication. Highlight the knowledge that the author has contributed to the field. Also, write about any gaps and/or contradictions you have found in the article. Take a standpoint of either supporting or not supporting the author's assertions, but back up your arguments with facts and relevant theories that are pertinent to that area of knowledge. Rubrics and templates can also be used to evaluate and grade the person who wrote the article.

Step 7: Craft a Conclusion.

In this section, revisit the critical points of your piece, your findings in the article, and your critique. Also, write about the accuracy, validity, and relevance of the results of the article review. Present a way forward for future research in the field of study. Before submitting your article, keep these pointers in mind:

To proofread your paper properly, start with reading it fully and by checking the following points:

The purpose of this document is to help students and researchers understand how a review of an academic journal is conducted and reported in different fields of study. Review articles in academic journals that analyze or discuss researches previously published by others, rather than reporting new research results or findings. Summaries and critiques are two ways to write a review of a scientific journal article. Both types of writing ask you first to read and understand an article from the primary literature about your topic. The summary involves briefly but accurately stating the key points of the article for a reader who has not read the original article. The critique begins by summarizing the article and then analyzes and evaluates the author’s research. Summaries and critiques help you learn to synthesize information from different sources and are usually limited to two pages maximum.

Compared to the rather huge amount of literature on manufacturing and information systems for mass customization, only little research discusses the role of the customer within the co-design process. Customers face new uncertainties and risks, coined "mass confusion" in this paper, when acting as co-designers. Building on a construction strategy of empirical management research in the form of six case studies, we propose the use of online communities for collaborative customer co-design in order to reduce the mass confusion phenomenon. In doing so, the paper challenges the assumption made by most mass customization researchers that offering customized products requires an individual (one-to-one) relationship between customer and supplier. The objective of the paper is to build and explore the idea of communities for customer co-design and transfer established knowledge on community support to this new area of application.

The number of service innovation articles has increased dramatically in the past 25 years. By reviewing 128 articles published between 1986 and 2010, primarily in leading marketing and innovation journals, this study analyzes the progression of service innovation research according to topicality and perspective. The authors summarize prior research by clustering it into three evolutional phases and drawing parallels with the evolution of the wider services marketing field. Overall, the view of service innovation has evolved, from a complement of traditional product innovation to a multidimensional, all-encompassing notion that entails several functions, both within and outside the firm.

Abstract In product development, innovation means bringing together people with different expertise to develop breakthrough product and service offers. In spite of their potential, cross-functional efforts are not yet adequately supported from a knowledge perspective, asking for a more open and bottom-up approach for knowledge management.

How to Review a Journal Article

rainbow over colonnade

For many kinds of assignments, like a  literature review , you may be asked to offer a critique or review of a journal article. This is an opportunity for you as a scholar to offer your  qualified opinion  and  evaluation  of how another scholar has composed their article, argument, and research. That means you will be expected to go beyond a simple  summary  of the article and evaluate it on a deeper level. As a college student, this might sound intimidating. However, as you engage with the research process, you are becoming immersed in a particular topic, and your insights about the way that topic is presented are valuable and can contribute to the overall conversation surrounding your topic.

IMPORTANT NOTE!!

Some disciplines, like Criminal Justice, may only want you to summarize the article without including your opinion or evaluation. If your assignment is to summarize the article only, please see our literature review handout.

Before getting started on the critique, it is important to review the article thoroughly and critically. To do this, we recommend take notes,  annotating , and reading the article several times before critiquing. As you read, be sure to note important items like the thesis, purpose, research questions, hypotheses, methods, evidence, key findings, major conclusions, tone, and publication information. Depending on your writing context, some of these items may not be applicable.

Questions to Consider

To evaluate a source, consider some of the following questions. They are broken down into different categories, but answering these questions will help you consider what areas to examine. With each category, we recommend identifying the strengths and weaknesses in each since that is a critical part of evaluation.

Evaluating Purpose and Argument

Evaluating the Presentation/Organization of Information

Evaluating Methods

Evaluating Data

Following, we have an example of a summary and an evaluation of a research article. Note that in most literature review contexts, the summary and evaluation would be much shorter. This extended example shows the different ways a student can critique and write about an article.

Chik, A. (2012). Digital gameplay for autonomous foreign language learning: Gamers’ and language teachers’ perspectives. In H. Reinders (ed.),  Digital games in language learning and teaching  (pp. 95-114). Eastbourne, UK: Palgrave Macmillan.

Be sure to include the full citation either in a reference page or near your evaluation if writing an  annotated bibliography .

In Chik’s article “Digital Gameplay for Autonomous Foreign Language Learning: Gamers’ and Teachers’ Perspectives”, she explores the ways in which “digital gamers manage gaming and gaming-related activities to assume autonomy in their foreign language learning,” (96) which is presented in contrast to how teachers view the “pedagogical potential” of gaming. The research was described as an “umbrella project” consisting of two parts. The first part examined 34 language teachers’ perspectives who had limited experience with gaming (only five stated they played games regularly) (99). Their data was recorded through a survey, class discussion, and a seven-day gaming trial done by six teachers who recorded their reflections through personal blog posts. The second part explored undergraduate gaming habits of ten Hong Kong students who were regular gamers. Their habits were recorded through language learning histories, videotaped gaming sessions, blog entries of gaming practices, group discussion sessions, stimulated recall sessions on gaming videos, interviews with other gamers, and posts from online discussion forums. The research shows that while students recognize the educational potential of games and have seen benefits of it in their lives, the instructors overall do not see the positive impacts of gaming on foreign language learning.

The summary includes the article’s purpose, methods, results, discussion, and citations when necessary.

This article did a good job representing the undergraduate gamers’ voices through extended quotes and stories. Particularly for the data collection of the undergraduate gamers, there were many opportunities for an in-depth examination of their gaming practices and histories. However, the representation of the teachers in this study was very uneven when compared to the students. Not only were teachers labeled as numbers while the students picked out their own pseudonyms, but also when viewing the data collection, the undergraduate students were more closely examined in comparison to the teachers in the study. While the students have fifteen extended quotes describing their experiences in their research section, the teachers only have two of these instances in their section, which shows just how imbalanced the study is when presenting instructor voices.

Some research methods, like the recorded gaming sessions, were only used with students whereas teachers were only asked to blog about their gaming experiences. This creates a richer narrative for the students while also failing to give instructors the chance to have more nuanced perspectives. This lack of nuance also stems from the emphasis of the non-gamer teachers over the gamer teachers. The non-gamer teachers’ perspectives provide a stark contrast to the undergraduate gamer experiences and fits neatly with the narrative of teachers not valuing gaming as an educational tool. However, the study mentioned five teachers that were regular gamers whose perspectives are left to a short section at the end of the presentation of the teachers’ results. This was an opportunity to give the teacher group a more complex story, and the opportunity was entirely missed.

Additionally, the context of this study was not entirely clear. The instructors were recruited through a master’s level course, but the content of the course and the institution’s background is not discussed. Understanding this context helps us understand the course’s purpose(s) and how those purposes may have influenced the ways in which these teachers interpreted and saw games. It was also unclear how Chik was connected to this masters’ class and to the students. Why these particular teachers and students were recruited was not explicitly defined and also has the potential to skew results in a particular direction.

Overall, I was inclined to agree with the idea that students can benefit from language acquisition through gaming while instructors may not see the instructional value, but I believe the way the research was conducted and portrayed in this article made it very difficult to support Chik’s specific findings.

Some professors like you to begin an evaluation with something positive but isn’t always necessary.

The evaluation is clearly organized and uses transitional phrases when moving to a new topic.

This evaluation includes a summative statement that gives the overall impression of the article at the end, but this can also be placed at the beginning of the evaluation.

This evaluation mainly discusses the representation of data and methods. However, other areas, like organization, are open to critique.

How to write an article review.

how to write article review

In this short guide, we will take a step-by-step approach to teach you how to write an article review. We will explain the differences between an article review for a variety of subjects and let you know where you can find a great example of an article review on the web. We will begin by first answering the question many students have about this kind of assignment.

What is An Article Review?

An article review summarizes and evaluates another person’s article. It’s an assignment that is usually given to introduce students to written works done by experts in a specific field. A critical review of journal article can be done in just about any discipline, but we can’t go in-depth for each. So we will stay focused on the ones you are most likely to have to work in and then break down the steps you need to take for writing a review article that truly impresses.

Some of the most common types are:

Each of these has a slightly different approach and style from one another and especially from book review writing. It’s a good idea to get your hands on an article review sample in the related field you must complete your assignment in. You can find excellent published pieces in academic journals at your school library. Or you can turn to a professional writing service to get a custom-written piece sent to you that you can use as an article review template.

What is a Peer Review Article?

Before we move on to the “how to write article review” portion of this guide, we will briefly discuss another type of review article you might come upon at some point: The peer-review article. This type of article is one that is written by a researcher or scholar and then is reviewed by experts in the field before publication. So that means the piece that you see in the journal has already been reviewed and critiqued by others. It also means that it has gone through different versions or drafts. Perhaps one of the best ways to learn how to write a critical review of a journal article is to have a look at how others review experts’ work before they reach publication.

How to Review an Article

The first thing you need to do before writing your review is fully understanding all that you have to do conduct an unbiased evaluation of the published work.

The first thing you need to know about how to review a research article is evaluating its organization. Your review will mirror the author’s structure and format. Focus on the most important elements, including main points, supporting evidence, and claims. It’s a good idea to break up the article into parts to better identify all of the essential elements that need to be addressed.

This type of assignment requires exceptional close reading. If you have gained access to an article review example you will see that the reviewer has been careful to address all of the original article’s main points and supporting evidence. Take what you get from the article and apply it to what you already know about the topic. Do this at least twice to ensure that you cover all of the most important information.

This should be done as a straightforward freewriting session. Just take the main points of the original article and attempt to rewrite in in your own words. This will let you identify the places where you are not in total agreement with what the author has presented. Your writing should be focused on all of the main arguments, main research points, and claims that the author makes.

How to Write a Review Article

The following 5 step-by-step process is all you need to know about how to start an article review. It’s a great idea to start with a couple of practice reviews so that you can become comfortable with this kind of assignment’s main elements.

The best way to adhere to the appropriate article review format is to create an outline before you start the process of writing. Review each of the summary points you made and compare them with the original article. Write down all instances of effective writing as well as any new contributions made to the field. Identify all of the article’s strengths and weaknesses and start to organize the main points with your critique in a clear and concise outline.

Take the original article, outline, and rewrite from the prior steps and start writing a rough draft covering all the main points, arguments, and findings. Since this is a draft you don’t need to worry about getting words right. Don’t stop to make corrections or grammar. Just get the draft down on the page as quickly as possible. Write the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion and then set the draft aside.

The main part of how to write a review of an article is writing your critique. Refer to your outline and summary to draft several paragraphs evaluating the effectiveness of the writer’s arguments. You should address whether the article was useful, thorough, and clear in explaining the subject. The critique will form the body paragraphs, so each paragraph should address a single sub-topic. In each paragraph, decide whether or not you agree with the writer backed up with sufficient support.

The introduction and conclusion should be written after you’ve written the main portion (critique body paragraphs) of the review. Your intro will identify the article, mention its central themes, and arguments made by the author. Your conclusion will summarize the main points of the article in addition to your critique of them. Each of these paragraphs should be no more than 10% to 15% of your review.

Despite everything you’ve learned about how to write an article review, you need to ensure you adhere to the fundamentals of good essay writing. This means that you should set your review aside for a few days before you start your revisions. If you have the time you should set it aside for more time before you start editing and proofreading your work. Writing a great academic review will earn you a high grade and you will be under greater scrutiny since you are critiquing someone else’s ideas, structure, and writing, so be sure to put in the extra work.

The insights included in the notes add context, which increases my level of understanding of the information, which in turn stimulates my imagination.

Step 7: Write the conclusion of the article review.

Summarize the main points in a paragraph. Write your opinions about the clarity, accuracy, and significance of the article in this paragraph. You can also comment on the implications if relevant. It can be helpful for further research. Note that the conclusion should only be 10% of your overall essay. The conclusion is a short summary of all your research. If you are writing an essay about online gambling it can contain information on how to find 10 deposit bonus casino offers.

Step 8: Proofread your work.

Reread your article review to check on grammar, mechanics and any mistakes and then correct them where possible. Remove any unnecessary information. Note that for a good review, you should identify and discuss 3-4 critical issues in the article.

With this guide you are sure to come up with the best article review. However, if you still have any doubts about writing article review yourself, don’t hesitate and reach out for academic guidance:

論文の種類 ジャーナル、総説(レビュー)、速報(レター)の違い

2019年8月4日 2019年10月4日 2分

原著論文と総説の違い

実は論文にはレビュー(総説)やレターなどたくさんの種類があります。

「これらの違いって一体なんだろう?」というのが論文を初めて読む人が抱く最初の疑問かもしれません。ここでは論文の種類と違いについて紹介します。

原著論文 (Journal article)

How To Write An Article Review

An article review essay is a critical analysis or evaluation of literature in a given field through making a summary of the article in question, comparison, or classification. In case it is a scientific article being reviewed, the writer will be required to use database searches to retrieve the results of the search. It is from the searches the writer chooses the article which is appropriate. It is a common skill that is developed in school, to help the students to establish analytical skills. It means the skills are not just used in the classrooms, but also applies in the work environment. Writing an article review has over time proved to be a difficult assignment for most students. The fact that it involves the critical evaluation of the ideas that have been presented in the article, means it is not just a summary. For most students, an article review is confused with an article summary. The critical analysis of the ideas in the article means the author has to go further than summarizing the content of the article.

Content of this article

1. Purposes of an Article Review

2. Step-by-step guide on article review writing

2.1 first read.

The first part of the article review writing process is reading the article to be reviewed for the first time. The first time helps the writer to understand what it is the article is actually talking about. If it is assigned reading in class, the student may not have come across the article in the past and thus will need to familiarize themselves with the content and the style of the author. The first reading of the article is crucial, as it helps the reader to connect with the author of the article to be reviewed. This also means that the reader will have to take note of the key points of the author, and the basic argument presented in the article, and note down some of the words, phrases, and concepts that are new. These are elements that will then be looked at before going into the next reading. After noting the new information, the reader is supposed to look up the meaning of the phrases, and words and read up on the concepts that have been presented in the article. The information on the various words, phrases, and concepts can be found online or even at the library. It helps with a better understanding of the article and information presented especially if the article is in an unfamiliar field. This also sets the premises for reviewing the article in question, given it is not possible to write a review of an article that one does not understand.

2.2 Close Read

This is followed by a close reading, which is associated with critical reading of the article. In this case, the reader is not just reading to understand but also forming an opinion of the presentation of the information, the style of the author, the ease of understanding the information resented, and even an opinion on the accuracy of the information presented. As such, close reading is associated with the analytical skills of the student. The writer is supposed to take notes of the various aspects of the article that they are going to include in the article review essay. It is crucial as it makes the work of writing the review much easier, relative to collating information that is then sorted out for inclusion in the essay.

2.3 Identify Ideas

After identifying the main ideas in the article, the writer may now develop the essay using their own words.

2.4 Present a Unique Article Review

The point behind an article review essay is to develop the skills to analyze information gathered from the various sources and present it in a unique manner that reflects the ideas of the essay and is presented in a manner that also shows the opinion of the writer. The writer has to be in a position to present the ideas in a professional manner, showing a depth understanding of the information found in the essay.

3. Article review writing process

The first part of the article review essay is the title, which informs the readers what the essay is about. The title is supposed to be short and precise, giving all the information that the reader may need to understand what the essay is about. At the same time, the title is supposed to be catchy, such that it gets the readers interested. For example, the title may be phrased as follows: “Evaluating the rising homegrown terrorism” .

This is then followed by the correct citation of the article to be reviewed. Ideally, it does not only give credit to the author of the article to reviewed but also gives the readers a chance to check out the article that is being reviewed. It is crucial, as some of the readers may want to first read the article under review or may want to compare and make opinions of their own other than what is established in the review essay. In an example, the reference to the article home terrorism may be cited as follows:

Park, S. (2016). Counter-Terrorism in France : Home-Grown Terrorism and the Change of Counter-Terrorism Policy. The Journal Of Peace Studies, 17(3), 117-140. http://dx.doi.org/10.14363/kaps.2016.17.3.117.

Within the text of the essay, however, the writer will acknowledge the work of the author as follows (Park, 2016).

When identifying the article, it is crucial that the writer selects an article that talks about a topic that they are familiar with. This will help them to better analyze the article as they have some background information. Choosing an article that the writer is not familiar with, will further complicate the analysis process. If for example the writer chooses an article on calculous and they are not familiar with the field, they will have a difficult time analyzing the same and may actually distort the meaning presented in the article.

The introduction of the article review essay should be catchy and inform the readers about the topic that they are going to discuss. This is then followed by the introduction of the article to be reviewed, with close reference to the main ideas and arguments presented by the author. The writer then introduces the author of the article and where the information is available, the credentials of the author, and some of their other works. If for example the author of the article is a senior lecturer at the local university and working with a local anti-terror agency, this should be brought to the attention of the readers as it builds on the credibility and authority of the information presented in the article.

The critique section of the essay is organized into three main parts, the introduction of the field in which the article belongs and the wide issues. This is then followed by the article content and later on the review of the ideas and concepts of the article according to the writer. This means that this is content that has to be unique to the writer. If for example, the writer does not agree with the strategies of reducing home terrorism, they may state so in this section and support their argument with facts.

In the conclusion, the writer summarizes the main points of the article and also connects the same with their opinion on the matter.

3.1 Proofreading

To make sure the article review essay is professional, the writer has to read through it and make all the necessary corrections such as grammatical errors.

David Kolb developed the Experiential Learning Cycle theory in 1984. In his theory, Kolb explained that learning happens in four stage cycles and four separate learning styles where the recipient learns by undergoing the different knowledge phases from experience to reflection, followed by conceptualizing and ends with Action. The Experiential learning theory according to Kolb outlines learning as the process of gaining, assimilating, transforming and owning knowledge by interacting with the environment (Kolb, 1984, p. 41). These interactions include abstract, concrete, reflective and active participation forms of learning.

The learning process follows this basic model (Saul McLeod, 2013)

‘The Last of Us’: A harsh world forces Ellie to grow up

Season 1, episode 8: ‘when we are in need’.

article review notes

Note: My name is Gene Park. I’m a reporter covering gaming culture for The Washington Post. I’m following “The Last of Us” from the perspective of someone who has played all the games (more than once).

The famous winter section of the video game version of “The Last of Us” is finally here in the penultimate episode of Craig Mazin’s HBO adaptation.

We open with a shot of a lakeside resort town, and a preacher reading Revelations from the Bible to his flock of extremely sad and tired-looking people. A little girl asks when she’ll be able to bury her father. The preacher, named David, says it’ll have to wait till spring. David speaks to another follower named James outside, played by Troy Baker, who portrayed Joel Miller in the video games. David may seem like a run-of-the-mill preacher, but his interaction with James suggests an insidious side. When David asks James if he’s still “with me,” Baker’s James barely nods his head, letting out a weak “yeah.” Baker’s quiet acting here tells us that James is either scared of David, or beholden to him in a way that feels impossible to escape. The same seems to apply to the rest of David’s flock.

Joel is still recovering from the injury he sustained two episodes ago, and Ellie decides to hunt for food as they’ve been reduced to eating scraps of beef jerky. This entire hunting sequence is lifted from the video game, giving both players and viewers an opportunity to see Ellie awkwardly transition from prey to predator. To her disbelief — and thanks to Joel’s earlier training — she hits a deer. The deer’s corpse is discovered by David and James, who went hunting because their town’s rations are running low.

Before they can take the deer, Ellie holds them at gunpoint and demands they move away. David appears surprised at Ellie’s age — and probably her gender, too — since she was able to sneak up on both men silently. The ensuing negotiation sequence is also lifted line by line from the game, with Ellie attempted to trade for medicine. David asks James to go back to town. James’s face betrays the fact that he disagrees, but he plays along anyway, leaving David and Ellie alone in a nearby house to warm up beside a fire.

Here, David and Ellie get to know each other. In the game, this scene was interrupted by an action sequence with infected zombies. In the show, we instead get some background on David’s faith, and how he became a preacher. He claims to have found God after the world ended, and he left the Pittsburgh quarantine zone with a group of people; they eventually settled thousands of miles away at this location.

Then, David drops the bomb: The men who attacked Joel and Ellie in episode 6 were from his group, and the man who got his neck snapped by Joel was the father of that little girl from the episode’s beginning. James returns with the medicine but holds Ellie at gunpoint. David insists that James lower the gun and give Ellie the medicine. James questions David: Are they really going to let Ellie get away?

“The Last of Us” has been a great stage for acting with faces. Scott Shepherd’s David and Bella Ramsey’s Ellie both do exceptional work here. David’s smirks and wrinkles belie his true intentions, while you can clearly see Ellie’s guard being let down … before it comes right back up after the realization that she’s in trouble. Ellie quickly returns to Joel to inject his injury with penicillin. They snuggle together.

David returns to his town’s makeshift food hall, a former steakhouse, with the deer. His whole flock is quiet and he shoots a glance at James. It’s clear that James excitedly told everyone in town that they found their friend’s killer. David reassures everyone that they’ll seek justice, and then the little girl speaks up: “You should kill them,” she says. David slaps the girl with a vicious backhand, our first overt sign that David lords over these people with abuse and gaslighting. Everyone sits down and eats their meal. James continues to be uncomfortable, for reasons we’ll discover later.

David’s town is a sharp contrast to Tommy’s Jackson, Wyoming haven. In Jackson, where everyone shares everything, children laughed, engaged in art, and there was liquor, active shops and food. They were on the verge of raising hogs for bacon. Meanwhile, under David’s leadership, the children are crying, and the adults’ bodies are wiry from hunger. If Jackson is the picture of success, David’s group is a portrait of a failing society.

Morning comes, and David’s group has tracked Ellie back to the suburb where she and Joel are holed up. Ellie arms Joel with a knife; he still seems out of it and unable to fend for himself. Ellie rides on horseback and fires shots at the group to lure them away from Joel’s hiding place. This attempt fails, as James shoots the horse. James and the rest of David’s men intend to kill Ellie, but David stops them abruptly. He seems to care for Ellie’s well-being to some extent, and insists on bringing her back to town, while leaving some men to hunt for Joel.

A child in a dangerous world: Inside the creation of Ellie

Little do these men know that Joel has recovered, at least a bit. Fans of the game have complained that Joel feels less violent in the show than he was in the games, which makes sense; action games typically have their protagonists kill hundreds of people. But they should be pleased with this episode, in which Joel methodically and carefully dispatches the three men hunting him down. He immediately murders one of the men who was able to find his location.

Ellie awakens to find herself caged, under David’s gaze. David pleads with her to tell him her name, but Ellie refuses. David tries to work his magic, aiming to convince Ellie to join his group. He gaslights her, suggesting she has no other choice.

We switch back to Joel’s perspective as he incapacitates two more men looking for him. Here we have a mirror image of his episode 6 stickup with the Native American couple. In that scene, Joel was a bit more gentle. Here, we see the full extent of Joel’s “interrogation” methods. It’s just torture; this is yet another scene lifted straight from the game. This is the moment where it becomes crystal clear to the audience that Joel isn’t exactly a wholesome father. He murders both men — despite their cooperation. One has to wonder whether this outburst of violence comes from Joel realizing that he has been unable to protect Ellie, yet again.

We cut back to Ellie realizing that David’s group has been eating human flesh after she notices an ear — and other chunks of human flesh — on the floor. David claims its out of desperation and poor decision-making. Ellie interrogates David about his motivations. David said it was cordyceps, not God, that helped him teach the ways of the world. The fungal infection isn’t “evil,” he says; it is simply nature doing its job. This inspired David to take an “any means necessary” approach to surviving, which includes holding a “violent heart.”

David entreats Ellie to join him in leading the group. It feels like a warped mirror image of the FEDRA officer praising Ellie’s knack for “leadership.” He places his hand gently on Ellie’s, his pedophilic intentions laid bare. Ellie touches back — a deeply discomforting moment — before we realize Ellie is lulling David into a false sense of security. She breaks his finger and tries to take his keys but fails. David gives up on changing Ellie’s mind and leaves. Ellie realizes she’s got no way out of this.

While Joel heads toward the town in search of Ellie, David and James return to chop Ellie up into “tiny little pieces.” In another scene lifted from the game, Ellie’s fast thinking leads her to finally declare to strangers that she’s infected. It’s an admission so shocking it keeps the men from killing her, especially since Ellie was able to take a bite out of David while trying to escape. Distracted by how “real” her infection looks, James gets a butcher knife to the neck as Ellie escapes into the steakhouse.

With the doors locked, Ellie grabs a piece of burning wood to set fire to the steakhouse. David and Ellie play a fatal game of cat and mouse, a gameplay sequence taken straight from the game. The show mimics the gameplay of Ellie sneaking around silently and arming herself to attack David. David’s lines are also straight from the game, including: “No one who’s infected fights this hard to stay alive.” David then says that he’ll play as Ellie’s “father.” You can sense the outrage and disgust build up within Ramsey’s performance as she lashes out at David with a steak knife. She lands a stab, causing David to drop his machete.

David climbs on top of Ellie and clearly intends to sexually assault her. Ellie screams in terror, but she’s able to grab David’s machete and turns it on him. Ramsey’s Ellie loses herself completely as she stabs David dozens of times. Ellie’s face, and the camera, is doused in blood. Ramsey’s scream reminds the audience that she was once Lady Mormont of “Game of Thrones,” and if there were any doubts about her casting, Ramsey’s performance in this episode should finally erase them.

Ellie leaves the burning building in a daze, covered in blood. Joel finds her but Ellie screams in retaliation as she’s still in a primal mode of survival. Joel assures her — “It’s me” — and embraces her completely. He calls her “baby girl,” the same term of affection he held for Sarah. With Joel’s acceptance of Ellie as his daughter complete, the two walk off into the winter haze and the episode ends.

Review: ‘A Party at the End of the World’

A stage notes renaissance.

Sophie Dorey

Sophie Dorey

From March 2-4, Stage Notes, a student-run musical theater club at UW, presented “A Party at the End of the World: A Dave Malloy Experience” at the Samuel E. Kelly Ethnic Cultural Theater. The performance showcased music from “Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812,” “Ghost Quartet,” “Preludes,” and “Octet.”

The original production was intended to be solely “Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812,” but unfortunately, the RSO encountered issues securing rights for the music. Instead, Stage Notes transformed the show into a cabaret-style concert that took attendees on a journey through “Great Comet” creator Dave Malloy’s discography.

“The cast, being wonderful and great people, we all got together and sat down and tried to find a solution,” Evan Ponyah, a fourth-year at UW and the director of the show, said. “Our solution was, what we referred to in the cast as, ‘The Great Quartet of Octeen-Twelve.’”

The show began with an emotional ballad from “Preludes” before transitioning into music from “Ghost Quartet,” with each act beginning with a short plot introduction. The synergy and passion of the entire cast was obvious, presenting inside-jokes and laughs alongside the poignant performances. Ponyah said that post-pandemic, Stage Notes has had a uniquely inclusive community.

“There was a really unique renaissance of Stage Notes culture that I feel is a lot more equitable now …. This one that we have now is a lot more thoughtful and empathetic towards its members,” Ponyah said.

After an intermission, the cast jumped into “Prologue” from “Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812,” with new costumes and a new vibrant energy as the actors interacted with the audience.

Sebastian Rojas-Rincon, a third-year art major, starred as the “dear, bewildered, and awkward” Pierre. Despite it being only his second production with Stage Notes, Rojas-Rincon brought a fiery passion to the performance.

“My first Stage Notes audition, I didn’t get into the production we were doing, and I was like, ‘You know, that’s fine,’” Rojas-Rincon said. “I went and saw the show, and it was amazing and encouraged me to get back in and audition. I got into [‘How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying’] and I was like, ‘This is the biggest slay I’ve ever been in.’”

Because of the rights issues, the “Great Comet” portion of the production featured music that had been individually written for the 14-person pit by Nick Franks, the music director.

Andrea Muljono, a fourth-year in computer science, was the rehearsal and pit pianist for the production, representing the academic range of the cast. As her fourth and final show with Stage Notes, Muljono found this production to be filled with some of the most talented people she has ever met.

“These students can not only sing incredibly difficult songs, they can also dance while doing it — while acting,” Muljono said. “It’s really like the three art worlds coming together, unified into one.”

Those interested in getting involved with Stage Notes, regardless of major or grade level, are welcome to audition for shows or participate in acting and improv workshops . Auditions for “Spring Awakening,” the RSO’s spring musical, take place March 8-10, and tickets for future productions can be found via Stage Notes’ Instagram .

“I totally encourage people to come to our shows just to see what they could be doing,” Muljono said. “Stage Notes is really open about allowing anyone from any background or major to come and do music.”

Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 Review: A Surface-like Slate for Less

The latest hybrid XPS isn't as expensive as the Microsoft Surface it apes, but parts of it aren't as good, either.

Dan Ackerman headshot

The newest XPS 13 two-in-one from Dell looks and feels a lot like the Surface Pro from Microsoft . Yes, there are many other Windows tablets with clip-on keyboards, but the Surface is the original and still best known, so it's the one you're most likely to compare with this.

I've always been a fan of the XPS line in general, and specifically the XPS 13 clamshell laptops . This two-in-one version has some of the same aesthetically minimalist touches and mod-feeling matte aluminum body. Even better, it costs a good deal less than a comparable Surface Pro, depending on how you configure each system.

article review notes

XPS 13 Two-in-One

A Surface Pro 9 with a Core i5 CPU, 16GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD, along with the keyboard cover, is $1,578. A similarly configured XPS 13 two-in-one, also with the keyboard cover, is $1,299. And that's with a bigger 512GB SSD, too. An exact comparison is tough because the Surface Pro 9 doesn't offer a pairing of Core i5 and 512GB, while the XPS 13 two-in-one offers only 512GB and 1TB storage options. Prices can also change regularly with limited time discounts and deals. (As of this review, the Surface Pro 9 is offering a free keyboard cover for a limited time, a savings of $179.)

There's also an ARM-based Surface Pro 9 (the model we reviewed) that uses Microsoft's SQ3 chip instead of one from Intel and adds 5G support, but there's no comparable XPS two-in-one option for that.

Dell XPS 13 9315 2-in-1

Keyboard and kickstand sins.

But configured as closely as possible, there's a pretty big price difference. Still, I'm still not sure I would go with the XPS two-in-one over the Surface Pro 9. Why? Because the two things the Surface has perfected about tablet/laptop hybrids, the kickstand and the keyboard cover, are not quite as perfected here.

dell-xps-2-in-1-2023-2

And that's a shame because the 13-inch 2,880x1,920 screen is bright and rich-looking. It's rated for 500 nits brightness, and in practice it makes for a very good TV/movie streaming device when lying in bed. The Surface Pro supports a faster 120Hz refresh rate, versus just 60Hz here. That can mean smoother video, but also have an impact on battery life. Having a higher, or variable, refresh rate is a nice feature to have, but most people will be happy with a 60Hz screen.

But the keyboard cover, which Dell calls the XPS Folio, is a letdown. I'll start with the good news: It's just $100 extra, not the criminal $179 Microsoft charges for its keyboard cover. But unlike the Surface keyboard, which can angle up at the back for a more ergonomic experience, the Dell version sits flat on your desk and that's it. The actual keys are large, flat, edge-to-edge-style keys, which is a good use of limited space, and in fact, it feels more like a solid laptop keyboard than the Surface version. But, the lack of any kind of incline option made it feel awkward.

dell-xps-2-in-1-2023-3

A far bigger sin is how the kickstand is incorporated into the XPS Folio itself, instead of being built into the tablet. That means to prop up the XPs 13 two-in-one, you need the full keyboard cover attached, even if you just want to prop the tablet up like a standalone screen. While the Surface Pro allows for almost unlimited kickstand angles, the back of the XPs Folio slides down into three magnetic stops, and it's entirely possible none of them will feel exactly right to you.

Fanless performance

Once you get past these design foibles, the XPs 13 two-in-one is a respectable performer for a U-series Core i5 Windows system. It's fanless, which makes it totally silent and helps battery life, even if it's a theoretical limiter on overall performance because the heat needs to be regulated.

A current M2 MacBook is faster, as is the Core i7 XPS 13 Plus and the most recent Core i5 XPS 13, but not by a huge amount. I'd call this a perfectly fine PC for mainstream tasks and even some photo or video work.

dell-xps-2-in-1-2023 with keyboard stand attached, rear/side view

Battery life is also nearly 7.5 hours on our online video streaming test. Again, nowhere near what some other laptops with bigger batteries can pull off, but still very good if you're going to be doing a lot of video streaming.

This see-sawing list of pluses and minuses leave the XPS 13 two-in-one in a strange place. The price is right, considering the components, accessories, design and performance. But in some of the quality of life issues, it falls behind the more expensive Surface Pro line, and you'll have to decide if the price tradeoff is worth it for the kickstand and keyboard differences.

Margaret Atwood Is Still Sending Us Notes From the Future

Her new story collection, “Old Babes in the Wood,” offers elegiac scenes from a marriage plus a grab bag of curious fables.

OLD BABES IN THE WOOD: Stories, by Margaret Atwood

There are authors we turn to because they can uncannily predict our future; there are authors we need for their skillful diagnosis of our present; and there are authors we love because they can explain our past. And then there are the outliers: those who gift us with timelines other than the one we’re stuck in, realities far from home. If anyone has proved, over the course of a long and wildly diverse career, that she can be all four, it’s Margaret Atwood.

We’ve recently been reminded of her gifts as a futurist: Since Roe v. Wade was overturned last year, “ The Handmaid’s Tale ” (1985) has begun to feel, at least in the United States, less like a story of a bullet dodged than like an eerie foretoken of our not-too-distant fate.

Yet Atwood is equally lauded for novels like “Cat’s Eye” (1988) and the Booker Prize-winning “ The Blind Assassin ” (2000), which sweep us through the 20th century, shedding light on both collective and personal pasts.

Her short stories, like her novels, are as likely to be set in the ancient world or in 1930s Toronto as on a post-apocalyptic Earth. If you consider yourself an Atwood fan and have only read her novels: Get your act together. You’ve been missing out.

“Old Babes in the Wood,” the Canadian author’s ninth story collection — the first since “ Stone Mattress ” (2014) — comprises three sections: “Tig and Nell,” “My Evil Mother” and “Nell and Tig.” The first and last, seven stories in total, give us episodes from the marriage of a couple with grown children, taking us more or less chronologically up to Tig’s death and Nell’s life alone, which she likens to “being a student again … the same formless anxiety, the same bare-bones meals.” Even before Tig’s departure, loss suffuses these stories — the loss of a neighbor, of a beloved cat, of Tig’s father. They’re stories that look backward.

While that perspective isn’t new for Atwood, the lens seems to have changed. The characters in “Stone Mattress” looked back in bitterness or bemusement or nostalgia or even revenge — but here, people look back in grief.

The collection is dedicated in part to Atwood’s husband, Graeme Gibson, who died in 2019. While Tig’s and Nell’s lives bear the glaze of invented details, stories like “Widows,” a short piece that’s simply a letter from Nell describing life after Tig’s death, feel immensely personal.

“Widows” is addressed to a friend who’s “much younger, although you don’t think so now.” But there’s a subtle sense in quite a few of these stories that they’re directed at a younger self — someone flummoxed by and unprepared for the changes of later life, someone who can only liken widowhood to student aimlessness. (Isn’t it odd, how aging turns out not to happen to old people, but to those who were so recently young?)

Given that the majority of her readership is younger than the 83-year-old author, the effect, even if unintended, of many stories here is that of wisdom from the advance guard. These are missives not from a speculative future, but from one we’re all headed for, if we’re lucky enough to survive. It’s a new kind of futurism from Atwood: calling back from just up the road, letting us know what lies in store.

It’s tempting to consider only Tig and Nell’s seven stories as one complete collection, in part because the nine middle pieces are so disconnected from the rest, and in part because while that middle section contains some of the strongest and most original stories, it also contains the wobbliest.

What a blast to relay their topics! A mother believes herself to be a witch; a snail’s soul fuses with that of a customer service representative; Hypatia of Alexandria tells a modern audience about her murder via clamshell; an alien, hired to entertain quarantined Earthlings during a pandemic, turns the legend of Patient Griselda into an unintentionally (for the alien) hilarious story of vengeance. The alien tells of a duke saddling up and riding to the rescue astride a snack. “Why are you all laughing?” he asks his audience. “What do you think snacks do before they become snacks?”

A number of these middle stories refer to Covid — either as a fact of the world (in “Bad Teeth,” two women have tea in the backyard because “at their age you have to be careful”) or a topic of conversation (in “The Dead Interview,” Atwood herself interrogates George Orwell through a psychic medium, and when he asks what she means by “anti-vaxxers” she answers, “It’s complicated”). In addition to the ambiguous “plague” that has led to quarantine in “Impatient Griselda,” there’s the disease in “Freeforall” that is “communicable through any sort of moist contact, including kissing,” and has forced humans into isolated groups where marriage is arranged. While it works as a story, this piece feels more like the prospectus of a novel that Atwood or one of her acolytes might one day develop — a world that deserves more than the 10 pages it’s allotted here.

The book cover of “Old Babes in the Wood,” by Margaret Atwood, shows an illustration of a white cat on a brown background. The cat’s eye looks like a bird.

A few of these middle stories reach for the present moment in other ways: The characters in “Airborne: A Symposium” struggle with changing mores in academia (“I find triggering triggering,” one says) while also reminiscing about fights in previous decades (“over womyn with a Y”). That particular story works beautifully in its bewildered juxtaposition of past and present feminism, but other pieces seem less committed to the project of examining the present world they invoke. The Covid invocations feel tacked on, and it’s in their somewhat unconvincing attempts at timeliness that these middle stories miss as often as they hit. They don’t feel carefully curated so much as collected from the disparate corners of Atwood’s mind.

On the other hand: Who cares?

Who on earth ever loved Margaret Atwood for her cautious restraint? She swings at all pitches, and sometimes she misses. (Her 2015 novel “ The Heart Goes Last ” lost me at the Elvis sex bots, but good God, it was fun.)

I’d be more tempted to dwell on the puzzle of that grab bag of middle stories being sandwiched between realistic, virtuosic, elegiac linked stories if the reasoning didn’t so simply present itself: This is Atwood. This is our four-faced Janus, who’s got one face turned to the past, one to the present, one to the future and the fourth inside a spaceship, telling stories about eating horses. Long may she reign.

Rebecca Makkai’s latest novel is “I Have Some Questions for You.” She was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for her 2018 book “The Great Believers.”

Mario Strikers: Battle League Scores New Update, Here Are The Full Patch Notes

Available now

It looks like Nintendo has finished with the big character-adding updates for Mario Strikers: Battle League after Bowser Jr. and Birdo were added back in December 2022. This doesn't mean, however, that the game will now sit update-free for the rest of time, as proven by Nintendo's latest patch to remove some pesky crashes.

It looks like there were a couple of bugs in the game up until recently, though the main one (nay, the only one that Nintendo officially discloses) seems to have been a result of an unfortunate Stadium theme and character pairing.

While the notes do not officially state which lineups were a problem for the game, this issue appears to have now been fixed. You can find this and (a little) more in the rather brief patch notes below:

Mario Strikers: Battle League ver. 1.3.2 (Released 8th March, 2023)

Issues Fixed
- Fixed an issue in which certain combinations of Stadium Themes and characters could cause the game to crash.
- Fixed several other issues to improve the gameplay experience.

Bit short, innit? For a reminder of our thoughts on the game, check out the full review below:

Such a wasted opportunity. What is it with these half baked, feature missing Mario sport games of late? Golf, tennis, football. So poor.

Mario Tennis Aces was brilliant...but the others were awful. Nintendo Switch Sports is boring too!

It was literally an open goal to put the best football game on Switch, Nintendo. How did you miss?!

Short (and barely useful) patch notes is par for the course with Nintendo. It might be only me and a handful of people but I'm a nerd for reading patch notes and trying to imagine how the code works and how they fixed it

Nintendo Life is also experiencing some crashes right now that need patching. This website crashes on me a lot, actually.

Bought this in December played for about a week solid and haven’t touched it since used to love Mario sports games but the ones available on switch are average at best think I had golf for about 2 days before getting fed up with it and selling it so glad I didn’t buy any digitally

Its hard to say how much I hate this game, how much I hate the fact that I paid 60 dollars for it, how much I hate it for offering virtually nothing besides good graphics and animation. With three more updates it's gonna reach one complete inch of content. The shallowest ever. And believe me, I don't wanna hate it that much

@Not_Soos yeah it’s taken about 5 attempts this morning to get the site to load time extension has had the same problem as well for me

man this game blows. mario sports on switch already do that thing where they add one new gimmick + online to justify cutting modes and content. this game gimmick is having less of everything

I played this one for over 30 hours beating the cups and competing online. Lack of features and modes is an issue, but the actual feel of the game and how it plays (once getting past the initial learning curve) is fantastic. For me this is one of the best arcade sports titles ever made. If it had a richer campaign it would without a question be the best.

@John_Deacon Mechanically speaking the game is actually quite intricate though. I would’ve liked more of a single-player mode, but the thing runs and looks beautifully on the Switch and it was fine-tuned and play tested to death. Like the best Mario sports games, each match is a rollercoaster of emotions and teams can come back from 4 to 5 point deficits if they use what is available.

bought it at launch... and sold after a month... it's a very good demo...

Buying physical copies of these games is the way. Play for a bit, sell after a bit.

@NotTelevision I actually agree with you. But that is more of a reason to be disappointed with this game.

The base gameplay is sooooooo good that is absurd that it's so barebones.

I just played it yesterday and while I don’t think it’s worth $60 I still had a good time

Ha. Why did I even check the comments. We all know the response to whoever utters the name of this game.

The Gamecube version was so much better.

Love how all the comment sections for Mario strikers articles consist of people talking abt how this game was missed potential and Mario sports games not being finished at launch

I think I like strikers more than golf and tennis on the switch. It really shines in couch coop. But I also haven’t played too many hours of it

Me and my kids have a great time playing this game together, I guess I’m the only one.
