In this new edition the authors have expanded on how to improve information acquisitions skills and recognize dubious claims, gravely important in this current climate of “fake news.” In addition, they have revised and expanded the distinction between subjective judgments and objective claims and revamped their explanation of inductive reasoning into four different types, introducing them in chapter 2 and further explaining them in chapter 11. This book is not about critical thinking as much as it is a book in critical thinking. The authors work to provide guided practice in what they and instructors think are the most important critical thinking skill sets for students.

By prompting students to engage with key concepts, while continually adapting to their individual needs, Connect activates learning and empowers students to take control resulting in better grades and increased retention rates. Proven online content integrates seamlessly with our adaptive technology, and helps build student confidence outside of the classroom.

More Engaging . . . More Relevant . . . More Student Success Imagine a class where students are actively and personally engaged in thinking critically while also discovering how to apply those thinking skills in everyday life. Godden, D. and Zenker, F. (2015). Denying antecedents and affirming consequents: The state of the art. Informal Logic: Reasoning and Argumentation in Theory and Practice, 35, 88-134.
David Godden , Frank Zenker
Recent work on conditional reasoning argues that denying the antecedent [DA] and affirming the consequent [AC] are defeasible but cogent patterns of argument, either because they are effective, rational, albeit heuristic applications of Bayesian probability, or because they are licensed by the principle of total evidence. Against this, we show that on any prevailing interpretation of indicative conditionals the premises of DA and AC arguments do not license their conclusions without additional assumptions. The cogency of DA and AC inferences rather depends on contingent factors extrinsic to, and independent of, what is asserted by DA and AC arguments.

An intro level text covering the basics of reasoning and argumentation, including some basic formal logic, and targeted at beginning undergraduates. I wrote it for a course I taught at Lansing Community College that covered both logic and critical thinking. This chapter introduces key concepts in critical thinking using films and music videos. It focuses on the critical thinking skills needed for the identification, analysis and evaluation of arguments. Based on 12 key questions, readers are introduced to core features of an argument such as “premise”, “conclusion” and “assumption”. The main types of arguments and the criteria for evaluating these arguments are also discussed. Throughout the chapter, films such as A Beautiful Mind, Bowling for Columbine and CSI: Miami, and music videos of John Lennon’s “Imagine”, Britney Spears’ “Toxic”, Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” and others are used to illustrate the concepts.

Moors came from Mauretania, which encompassed areas of the modern-day countries of Algeria and Morocco. They were of mixed Arab and Berber heritage, and they expanded settlements throughout North Africa in later centuries.
There is some debate amongst experts as to what race “Moor” refers to in Othello; however, the most common interpretation is that Othello was black and most likely of African descent.
