The plot of the film is based on Indian folktale Baital Pachisi. This completely changes Vikram's perspective on good and evil.

7 Superhit South Indian Films From 2022 That Should NEVER Be Remade & Ruined By Bollywood

Bollywood’s obsession with remakes continues to spurn the Indian audience that are tired of seeing the same story being rehashed. Call it laziness on the filmmakers’ part or lack of originality, it’s a trend that needs to stop if the Hindi film industry wants to get back to its glory days.

This year’s top five highest grossers were original films, not remakes. That should be a big message for Bollywood filmmakers who are constantly looking for films to remake. Most of these are remakes of blockbuster Telugu and Tamil films. However, with the rise of OTT, most people have easy access to the original films and hence, have no interest in spending more money on a shoddy remake.

Here are seven superhit south Indian films from 2022 that should never ever be remade by Bollywood for its own good:

The Kannada film has created waves with its unique concept and has become the highest grossing Kannada film . It replaced both KGF films to make this record.

In an interview with Times of India , Rishab Shetty, Kantara ’s director and lead actor shared that he didn’t want the film to be picked up for a remake. He said, “To play such characters you have to believe in the roots and culture. There are many big actors in the Hindi film industry whom I admire. But I am not interested in remakes.”

2. KGF Series

Owing to the grand success of KGF: Chapter 1 and KGF: Chapter 2 , a major chunk of the Indian audience is well versed with the franchise and has probably seen both movies. The Hindi dubbed version of KGF: Chapter 2 was also one of the highest grossing Hindi films this year. Hence, if Bollywood ever decided to remake these movies, it’s in for a big loss since the movie would have lost its novelty factor.

RRR became a global hit with Hollywood actors and filmmakers praising the film even before it created Oscar buzz . Though the film was originally released in Telugu, it’s Hindi dubbed version was soon made available on OTT platforms. Like KGF , most people in India (and even abroad) have already seen this movie. Remaking it would be a terrible idea since everyone already knows the story of this film.

Kamal Hassan’s Vikram was yet another winner at the box office in 2022 and a sequel to Kamal Hassan’s 1986 film by the same name. Owing to its popularity, this Tamil film should never be picked up for a remake by Bollywood since the suspense it holds as an action-thriller will be lost. Moreover, it’s hard to imagine anyone else as the macho Agent Vikram, except Kamal Hassan.

5. Sarkaru Vaari Paata

Made on a budget of Rs 60 crores, this Telugu film earned Rs 230 crores worldwide, becoming one of the biggest hits of 2022. Starring Mahesh Babu as the male lead, Sarkaru Vaari Paata had an old-school story of a man fighting for his rights while winning over a girl and reforming the villain along the way. Despite the done-to-death formula, the movie became a superhit. Remaking it would bring nothing new to the audience in terms of story or concept.

6. Bimbisara

A king who has the ability to time travel from 500 BC to modern-day Hyderabad is not a common story told in films. Bimbisara ’s concept was rather unique and perhaps that is why the movie was able to make a mark on people. Though this Telugu film wasn’t as successful as RRR , there’s a good chance that a Bollywood remake will ruin it by adding unnecessary drama and plotlines, taking away its original charm.

7. Sita Ramam

Mrunal Thakur and Dulquer Salman’s Sita Ramam was made on a paltry budget of Rs 20-30 crores, but collected over Rs 105 crores at the box office. The simple-hearted love story struck a chord with people who hadn’t seen such a movie in a long time.

When asked about a Hindi remake for Sita Ramam , Dulquer Salman’s stance was clear :

“To play such characters you have to believe in the roots and culture. There are many big actors in the Hindi film industry whom I admire. But I am not “Even before I became an actor, I knew then that if there is a classic film, if the film is really loved, is a huge hit, not to touch it...“Sorry, I don’t think it is a film that can be made again, honestly. Every time we love a classic film, I don’t think you should do a sequel, or do anything.”

He added, “Just because it is loved and done so well, you can’t milk it. It is like the golden egg story. You can’t kill the goose.”

Starring Vijay, this blockbuster film is about two brothers who are on opposite trajectories in life. One is a magician who fights his own demons and the other is a do-gooder doctor. But things take a turn for the worse when the doctor gets falsely embroiled in the murder of his colleague, only to discover the dark side of the medical industry.

5. Pogaru — Voot

A classic film where the hero fights for the rights of the common man, this Dhruva Sarja starring film went all out in its portrayal of a man as a vehicle for social change. Even though the film was criticised for toxic masculinity, it managed to rake in the big bucks, much like KGF-2.

And ever since it has made a place in people’s hearts with its story and picturization. It is directed by ‘Ugramm’ and ‘Agastya’ director, Prashanth Neel. Despite being only a few movies old he has made his mark in the industry with KGF. Are you still not over the KGF fever yet? The concept of KGF is both realistic and heartbreaking and that’s what reached the audiences. Apart from the concepts of slavery and torture, KGF also offers a fantastic visual treat. Prashanth Neel outdone himself in terms of the direction and also props to the post-production teams. So, after such a smashing first movie, KGF 2 is back in theatres. What is KGF about?

KGF stands for Kolar Gold Fields which are illegal gold mines run by Mafias of the city. The story of KGF is believed to be based on true events. So, it is about power shifts and slavery and torture of the poor, and much more. Our hero and the Massiah for the poor, Rocky started on a different quest. However, when he witnesses some of the brutality himself he decided to for the oppressed instead. On his mission to kill a mafia and secure his position, he accidentally becomes a savior of the poor.

The story of KGF is gripping, edgy, and grotesque but it is also hopeful in some ways. Hands down one of the best movies of this era and a must-watch. But there have been many such movies with the hero coming to power or addressing a social issue. And I have listed some of them. Here are the top 10 movies similar to KGF.

Salman Khan’s Wanted which was released in 2009 is similar to KGF in a lot of ways. Firstly, the social issue that it tackles, sexual assault and kidnapping. And secondly, it is also about a hero playing an underdog and fighting all the bad guys. Radhe first appears to be on the other side of the road until he is revealed to be an officer in disguise.

Rocky promises his mother that he’ll make a mark on himself. And Radhe also promises his father that he’ll take down every bad guy on the earth. Also, both the heroes are undercover for half of the movie. So, even though wanted is not as picturesque as KGF, they are still quite similar.

Another one of the OG movies, starring Amir Khan which released in 2008. Ghajini is not as dark as KGF in the first half. But soon enough our sweet romantic hero turns into a maniac with short-term memory loss. Similar to KGF the story of revenge continues in this movie.

Another common ground is the social issue it tackles. Asin’s character Kalpana accidentally discovers a human trafficking racket run by a businessman. And is brutally murdered so that the secret stays hidden. Similar to how slaves at the goldfields are slaughtered in KGF. So, believe it or not, Ghajini and KGF are pretty similar.

Another story about crime lord and gangster world. It is an action-packed and the edge of the seat thrilling movie. Similar to KGF it deals with a powerful underworld gangster group. And the one-man army that takes them down.

Saaho again is a battle of power just like how power exploits the less powerful in KGF. It also stars south-India superstar Prabhaas in the lead role alongside Shraddha Kapoor.

Shah Ruk Khan’s action film released in 2017 also has some similarities to KGF. Raees is about a young boy who learns at a fragile age that money is everything. And sticking by his mother’s philosophy he involves in the illegal alcohol trade. Also in KGF, Rocky learns pretty soon, the importance of power and money. After seeing his poor widow mother struggle, he makes power and money his mission.

However, Raees gives the message that no crime will go unpunished even if the hero is doing it. So Raees becomes a victim of his actions and dies. On the other hand, Rocky chooses the right thing and becomes a Massiah.

Remember the flop show that was this Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor starrer movie? Even though the delivery of the storyline was not perfect, it still tackle some grave issues. It sheds light on the lives of Bangladeshi refugees after their war of independence.

The heroes, Bikram and Bala are refugees and just like Rocky tries everything to get to a position of power. But then again, unlike Rocky, they go down the wrong path which ends up killing them. You could say that the powerplay in this movie is similar to that of KGF.

Another great OG Bollywood movie on the list. Guru starring Abhishek Bacchan and Aishwariya Rai in lead roles is a story about an ambitious man. A fearless ambitious man much like Rocky, who can also do anything to achieve his dreams.

The decent-looking man turns grey as he corrupts himself with illegal businesses. Since he wanted his dreams fulfilled one way or another, he does not mind being dishonest. However, this movie is not as action-packed and conceptual as KGF. I put this on the list because I found the character traits of Guru and Rocky pretty similar.

4. Manikarnika

She is the first Queen of Indian History who refused to bow down against the British Raj. Similar to Rocky in KGF, she also became a Massiah and a beam of light for women as well as her kingdom

This movie is action-packed and picturesque just like KGF. It is although a period drama but the theme of impression and fighting back against it remains true. One of the most outstanding woman-centric period dramas in the history of Bollywood cinema. So, it rightfully deserved the mention.

Rajamouli’s epic period drama took the world by storm. So, there was no doubt about it being on the top 3 of this list. Bahubali sheds light on multiple issues, like misuse of power, harassment of women, and murder. And all of these themes are recurrent in KGF as well.

It is so poetic to think about two different people in the position of power who got two different fates. On one hand, Bahubali’s brother Bhallaldev misuses his power and forces himself on Devsena. And on the other Bahubali becomes a just ruler. The former is killed by fire and later becomes the King, now that’s poetic justice.

Also in terms of action, drama and beautiful cinematography Bahubali and KGF are pretty close to each other.

Yet another story about powerplay and politics. Similar to KGF, this movie shows the struggles of the colonized people. RRR is about two friends who are revolutionaries and fight together against the British Rule. This movie stars big names like N.T Rama Rao Jr., Ram Charan, and Alia Bhatt. It was released pretty recently and the buzz it created was insane.

Apart from the storyline and picturization, the amazing acting done by Allu Arjun as well as Naveen Gowda is par excellence. So this movie had to be on top of the list.

Agnipath (the new one with Hritik) has lots of action scenes. Also, Action Jackson is fast paced and lots of action, but it was badly received by critics and masses. In older movies go for Amitabh movies like Zanjeer, Agnipath, Coolie, Don, etc or Mithun movies from the same era.
