What is electrical engineering?

Electrical engineering is the design, building and maintenance of electrical control systems, machinery and equipment. Some electrical engineering concerns are also found in mechanical and civil engineering.

The term electrical engineering often includes electronics engineering. While electrical engineers mainly focus on large-scale production and distribution of electrical power, electronics engineers are concerned with smaller electronic circuits and often also work with computers and other modern technologies. However, any undergraduate course will include elements of both electrical and electronics engineering.

Electrical engineers work in transport networks, lighting, heating, ventilation, lift systems, power generation and distribution, renewable energy, manufacturing and construction. You will elaborate project plans, estimate project timescales and costs, manage the work of technicians and craftspeople, test installations, analyse data and ensure that health and safety regulations are met.

What might you find on an electrical engineering degree.

A lot of electrical engineering undergraduate degrees will include elements of electronics engineering too. Overall, you will develop analytical, technical and engineering design skills.

First year courses usually overlap across all engineering degrees usually including mathematics, communications engineering and signals, engineering principles, systems and communications and laboratory and presentation skills. There will also be modules specific to electrical engineering such as circuits and fields, computer engineering, real-time systems, analog electronics, embedded systems projects, and engineering programming.

What should I study to do an electrical engineering degree?

Mathematics is essential to do electrical engineering at university. Many universities will also ask candidates to have done further or advanced mathematics. In addition, universities will want you to have done physics or chemistry or a technology subject.

You can also stand out if you express your interest in the subject by having participated and obtained good results in mathematics and physics challenges. Extra-curricular engineering courses or activities may also help you in the application process.

The Serbian-American Nikola Tesla is one of the most famous physicists, inventors, electrical and mechanical engineers. He was an outstanding student of the Austrian Polytechnic in Graz, Austria, where he passed almost twice as many exams as he had to.

American Lynn Conway’s Mead and Conway revolution in VLSI design, career at IBM and invention of generalised dynamic instruction handling make her one of the most important electrical engineers today. She studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Columbia University ’s School of Engineering and Applied Science in the US.

Austrian Claire F. Gmachl, professor of electrical engineering at Princeton University is known for her studies in quantum cascade lasers. She studied physics at the University of Innsbruck and did a PhD in electrical engineering at the Technical University of Vienna .

Hungarian-born American Rudolf E. Kalman was an electrical engineer, mathematician and inventor known for the development of the Kalman filter, a mathematical algorithm widely used in signal processing, control systems, guidance, navigation and control.

Embedded systems are computing platforms that are embedded into a larger mechanical or electrical system, where they collect data, perform computations, and control the larger system’s actions; examples include “smart” thermostats (e.g., Nest), automotive sub-systems, industrial robots, and flight control systems. When embedded systems are provided with network connectivity, the resulting capability enables the “Internet of Things” – large scale machine-to-machine interconnections that provide distributed intelligence intersecting wide swaths of everyday life. This course will use the Arduino platform to investigate fundamental issues associated with embedded systems and their role in the Internet of Things.

EE 20224 – Introduction to Electric Circuit Analysis

An introduction to the modeling and analysis of electric circuits – this course covers basic linear circuit analysis principles that include KCL, KVL, nodal and mesh analysis methods, network theorems, operation amplifiers as linear circuit elements, and transient analysis of first-order RC/RL circuits.

EE 20225 – Introduction to Electrical Engineering

This course serves as an introduction to the field of electrical engineering through various hands-on experiences. Students will gain skills in using breadboards, electronic components and electrical test equipment. Students will be introduced to concepts in both electrical systems and devices that will be developed more-completely in later courses, so this course serves as an overview of the breadth of electrical engineering courses at Notre Dame. The course includes one three-hour laboratory session and one 50-minute lecture per week. Grading is based on pre-lab assignments, laboratory reports and a final exam.

EE 30321 – Embedded Systems

Embedded systems are everywhere. Use your phone, look at your watch, turn on your TV and you are interacting with an embedded system. Complex systems such as cars, robots, and airplanes will have dozens of embedded systems that work together to complete a complex task.In this course you will learn the basics of designing, programming, and interfacing needed to build an embedded system. It will provide a hands-on experience on how an embedded system can be used to solve Electrical Engineering problems

EE 30342 – Microelectronic Circuit Design

Fundamentals of transistor integrated circuit design, including frequency response, feedback, stability, and frequency compensation with application to operational amplifiers, phase-locked loops, and AM/FM transmission and reception. Includes laboratory.

EE 30344 – Signals and Systems

EE 40354 – Multimedia Signals & Systems

This course will examine multimedia signals and design of systems for the capture, storage, transmission and reproduction of such signals. Signals of particular interest will include, audio and visual signals. The course will examine both the theoretical underpinnings of the representations and processing techniques along with common signal standards such as MP3, JPEG and MPEG.

EE 40432 – Introduction to Systems Biology

The goal of this course is to highlight elementary design principles inherent in biology. Many of the underlying principles governing biochemical reactions in a living cell can be related to network circuit motifs with multiple inputs/outputs, feedback and feedforward. This course draws on control theory and elementary biology to provide a mathematical framework to understand biological networks. The topics examined in the course are drawn from current research and include: transcription networks, stochastic gene induction, adaptation, oscillators (circadian rhythms), riboswitches, plasticity, metabolism, pattern development and cancer. The course is intended for advanced undergraduates and graduate students. There is an optional lab that focuses on transforming bacteria, stem cell biology and stochastic simulation. EE 40446 – IC Fabrication

This course introduces the student to the principles of integrated circuit fabrication. Photolithography, impurity deposition and redistribution, metal deposition and definition, and other topics. Students will fabricate a 5000 transistor CMOS LSI circuit.

An introduction to the generation, transmission, and detection of information-bearing signals. Analog and digital modulation techniques including AM, FM, PSK, QAM, and PCM. Time and frequency division multiplexing.

EE 40458 – RF & Microwave Circuits for Wireless Communications Laboratory

This course is an introduction to microwave circuit design and analysis techniques, with particular emphasis on applications for modern microwave communication and sensing systems. An integrated laboratory experience provides exposure to fundamental measurement techniques for device and circuit characterization at microwave frequencies. Students will develop an enhanced understanding of circuit design and analysis principles as applied to modern microwave circuits, as well as become familiar with design techniques for both hand analysis and computer-aided design. An appreciation for basic measurement techniques for characterization of microwave devices, circuits, and systems through laboratory experiments will also be developed.

EE 40468 – Optics and Photonics

A hands-on overview of the important role of photons alongside electrons in modern electrical engineering. Photonics technologies studied include lasers, optical fibers, integrated optics, optical signal processing, holography, optoelectronic devices, and optical modulators. A survey of the properties of light, its interactions with matter, and techniques for generating, guiding, modulating, and detecting coherent laser light.

EE 40471 – Digital Signal Processing

An introduction to the theory and application of digital information processing: analog/digital and digital/analog conversion, transform domain representation of discrete-time signals and systems, Z-transform, signal flow graphs, discrete Fourier transform, fast Fourier transforms, frequency analysis, filter design, filter structures, Wiener filter, finite-precision effects, applications in communications, and the analysis and synthesis of audio and image data.

EE 40472 – Electrical and Hybrid Vehicles

The course in an introduction to modern electric and hybrid-electric vehicles. It covers basic aspects of batteries, electric motors, powertrain systems, and the vehicle-road system. Emphasis will be placed on energy and power flows in electric and hybrid-electric vehicle systems. Optimization of energy usage for given driving cycles will also be addressed in some detail. Some of the commercially available power management schemes will be introduced and potential alternatives will be explored.

EE 40478 – Introduction to Quantum Computing

This course will introduce the matrix form of quantum mechanics and discuss the concepts underlying the theory of quantum information. Some of the important algorithms will be discussed, as well as physical systems that have been suggested for quantum computing.

EE 47040 – Biomedical Device Engineering and Physics

Technical advances at the forefront of physics frequently drives biomedical innovation and improves our understanding and treatment of disease. In this course, we will study the physics behind several modern medical diagnostic, therapeutic, and imaging technologies in the context of the biomedical needs they address.

EE 47055 – Introduction Biophotonics and Biomedical Optics

The goal of this course is to provide students with the knowledge to understand and apply state-of-the-art biomedical optical imaging and sensing techniques. This course will teach the fundamentals of light interactions with biological tissues, the preclinical and clinical applications of biomedical optical image/sensing, and the instrumentation required to do so. Topics explored include diffuse optics, tissue spectroscopy, florescence imaging, optical coherence tomography, confocal and nonlinear microscopy techniques, endoscopy, photoacoustics, and laser surgery.

Master’s Degree

Each department in the Henry Samuel School of Engineering and Applied Science has a graduate adviser. A current list of graduate advisers can be obtained from the Office of the Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, 6426 Boelter Hall, Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science.

Students are assigned a faculty adviser upon admission to the School. Advisers may be changed upon written request from the student. All HSSEAS faculty serve as advisers.

New students should arrange an appointment as early as possible with the faculty adviser to plan the proposed program of study toward the M.S. degree. Continuing students are required to confer with the adviser during the time of enrollment each quarter to keep track of progress towards the degree and, when necessary, to modify/refine the study list.

Based on the quarterly transcripts, the departmental graduate adviser and Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs review student records at the end of each quarter. Special attention is given to students who were admitted provisionally or are on probation. If their progress is unsatisfactory, students are informed in writing by the Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs.

Students are strongly urged to consult with the departmental student office staff and/or the Office of Academic and Student Affairs regarding procedures, requirements and the implementation of policies. In particular, advice should be sought on advancement to candidacy for the M.S. degree, and on the use of the Filing Fee.

Areas of Study

Student can pursue specialization across three major areas of study: circuits and embedded systems, physical and wave electronics, and signals and systems. Student must select a number of formal graduate courses to serve as their major and minor fields of study according to requirements listed under Course Requirements for the master’s comprehensive plan (eight courses) and thesis plan (seven courses). A formal graduate course is defined as any 200-level course, excluding seminar or tutorial courses. The selection of the major and minor course sequences must be from different established tracks, or according to ad hoc tracks, or combinations of the two. The selected courses must be approved by the student’s faculty adviser.

A track is a coherent set of courses in some general field of study. The department suggests lists of established tracks as a means to assist students in selecting their courses. Suggested tracks are described under Course Requirements. Students are not required to adhere to the suggested courses in any specific track. The selection of courses for the master’s degree program is tailored to the student’s professional objectives and  must meet the requirements outlined below. The minimum standards and course requirements for the master’s degree program are:

Prerequisite. B.S. degree in engineering or a related field.

Time-to degree . All master’s degree course requirements must be completed within two academic years from admission into the program.

Academic standards . Students must maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 each quarter and a grade of B or better in all graduate courses.

Comprehensive Examination Plan

The master’s comprehensive examination requirement is satisfied through completion of an individual study (Electrical Engineering 299) under the direction of a faculty member. The student is assigned a topic of individual study by the faculty member and the study culminates with a written report and an oral presentation. The master’s individual study program is administered for each student by the faculty member directing the course, the director of the area to which the student belongs, and the Vice-Chair of Graduate Affairs. Students who fail the examination may be re-examined once with the consent of the Vice-Chair of Graduate Affairs.

Thesis Plan

Every master’s degree thesis plan requires the completion of an approved thesis that demonstrates the student’s ability to perform original, independent research.

The master’s thesis requirement is satisfied through completion of a thesis that is under the direction of the student’s faculty adviser and meets the approval of a thesis committee comprised of the adviser and two other faculty members. Thesis research must be conducted concurrently with the required coursework.

Time-to-Degree

The average length of time for students in the  master’s degree program is five quarters. The maximum time allowed for completion of the degree is two academic years from the time of admission to the master’s degree program.

Written and Oral Qualifying Examinations

Academic Senate regulations require all doctoral students to complete and pass University written and oral qualifying examinations prior to doctoral advancement to candidacy. Also, under Senate regulations the University oral qualifying examination is open only to the student and appointed members of the doctoral committee. In addition to University requirements, some graduate programs have other pre-candidacy examination requirements. What follows in this section is how students are required to fulfill all of these requirements for this doctoral program.

The written qualifying examination is known as the Ph.D. preliminary examination in the School. The purpose of the examination is to assess the student’s competency in the discipline, knowledge of the fundamentals, and potential for independent research. Students admitted first to the master’s program in this department must complete all of the master’s degree program requirements with a grade-point average of 3.5 in order to be considered for admission into the doctoral program. Students can take the Ph.D. preliminary examination only after admission into the doctoral program. The examination is held once each year. Students are examined independently by a group of faculty members in the student’s general area of study. The examination by each faculty member typically includes oral and written components. The student is required to pass all components of the examination at one time. A student who fails the examination may repeat it once, subject to the approval of the Vice-Chair of Graduate Affairs. The preliminary examination, together with the doctoral course requirements, should be completed within two academic years after matriculation into the doctoral program. The department strongly recommends that students take this examination during their first year in the doctoral program.

After passing the written qualifying examination described above, the student is ready to take the University Oral Qualifying Examination. Students are required to take the University Oral Qualifying Examination when all courses have been completed and within one year after the Ph.D. Preliminary Examination is passed. The nature and content of the examination are at the discretion of the doctoral committee, but ordinarily include a broad inquiry into the student’s preparation for research. The doctoral committee also reviews the prospectus of the dissertation at the oral qualifying examination.

Students nominate a doctoral committee prior to taking the University Oral Qualifying Examination.  The doctoral committee consists of a minimum of four members. Three members, including the chair, are inside members and must hold appointments at UCLA in the student’s major department in the School. The outside member must be a UCLA faculty member outside the student’s major department. Students should consult Standards and Procedures for Graduate Study at UCLA regarding petitions for exceptions to this policy.

Advancement to Candidacy

Students are advanced to candidacy upon successful completion of the written and oral qualifying examinations.

Doctoral Dissertation

Every doctoral degree program requires the completion of an approved dissertation that demonstrates the student’s ability to perform original, independent research and constitutes a distinct contribution to knowledge in the principal field of study.

Final Oral Examination (Defense of the Dissertation)

Required for all students in the program.

All doctoral degree requirements must be completed within five academic years from matriculation into the doctoral program.

Termination of Graduate Study and Appeal of Termination

University Policy

A student who fails to meet the above requirements may be recommended for termination of graduate study. A graduate student may be disqualified from continuing in the graduate program for a variety of reasons. The most common is failure to maintain the minimum cumulative grade point average (3.00) required by the Academic Senate to remain in good standing (some programs require a higher grade point average). Other examples include failure of examinations, lack of timely progress toward the degree and poor performance in core courses. Probationary students (those with cumulative grade point averages below 3.00) are subject to immediate dismissal upon the recommendation of their department. University guidelines governing termination of graduate students, including the appeal procedure, are outlined in Standards and Procedures for Graduate Study at UCLA .

Special Departmental or Program Policy

A recommendation for termination is reviewed by the school’s Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs.

Master’s

In addition to the standard reasons noted above, a student may be recommended for termination for

(1) Failure to maintain a grade point average of 3.0 in all courses and in those in the 200 series.

(2) Failure to maintain a grade point average of 3.0 in any two consecutive terms.

(3) Failure of the comprehensive examination.

(4) Failure to complete the thesis to the satisfaction of the committee members.

(5) Failure to maintain satisfactory progress toward the degree within the three-year time limit for completing all degree requirements.

(1) Failure to maintain a grade point average of 3.5 in all courses and in any two consecutive quarters prior to the successful completion of the University Oral Qualifying Examination.

Electrical Engineering (EE) is one of the broadest of all engineering majors and is much more than just building electrical circuits. Electrical engineering is the application of electronics, electrical science and technology, and computer systems to the needs of society. An electrical engineer is responsible for designing and integrating electronic/electrical systems in diverse industries such as defense, communications, transportation, manufacturing, health care, construction, and entertainment.

What is Electrical Engineering?

Electrical engineering is a broad discipline of study that includes circuit design, analog and digital electronics, electromagnetics, electro-optics, control systems, power systems, communications, and signal/image processing. In the event that the major is under enrollment control, a higher minimum cumulative grade-point average is likely to be needed and students must be enrolled in the College of Engineering or Division of Undergraduate Studies at the time of confirming their major choice. 

Degree Requirements

For the Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, a minimum of 127 credits is required:

27 of the 45 credits for General Education are included in the Requirements for the Major. This includes: 9 credits of GN courses; 6 credits of GQ courses; 3 credits of GS courses; 9 credits of GWS courses.

Requirements for the Major

To graduate, a student enrolled in the major must earn a grade of C or better in each course designated by the major as a C-required course, as specified by Senate Policy 82-44 .

  CMPEN 275 does not require a grade of C or better.

An electrical engineer is responsible for designing and integrating electronic/electrical systems in diverse industries such as defense, communications, transportation, manufacturing, healthcare, construction, power/energy, and entertainment. Some graduates work as design engineers in research labs where they help design state-of-the-art electronic circuits, devices, and systems. Others work in a manufacturing environment where they help improve the manufacturing of existing products. Electrical circuits may be found everywhere, from microscopic ones in integrated circuits found in music players and mobile phones to massive ones that light our houses. 

This Basic Electrical Circuits training includes analytical techniques that may be applied to many types of circuits. The course starts by talking about electrical variables like current and voltage that are important elements in a circuit, and then covers fundamental elements like R, L, C, and controlled inputs and their characteristics. 

The Basic Electrical Circuits syllabus covers generic analysis methods that may be used on any circuit. The syllabus includes circuit theories and the fundamentals of a bad feedback circuit using op-amps. Following completion of this course, students should be able to evaluate memoryless linear circuits.

Introductory Neuroscience and Neuro-Instrumentation

Introductory Neuroscience & Neuro-Instrumentation

The ‘Introductory Neuroscience & Neuro-Instrumentation’ online course is a design-based program offered in the Swayam portal which is an initiative by the ministry of education in India. This faculty development program approved by the AICTE is developed and provided by the National Program for Technology Enhanced Learning in collaboration with the  Indian Institute of Science(IISC) in Bangalore. The course study is focused on the design aspects and implementations of  neuroscience in our day-to-day lives.

The program is conducted for a period of twelve weeks by the course instructor from the center for Bio-systems science and engineering in IISC, Dr. Mahesh Jayachandra is the facility technology manager in neurophysiology. This is an elective course and developed as a part of the electrical,  electronics, and communication engineering domain.

The students of the ‘Introductory Neuroscience & Neuro-Instrumentation’ training program will gain three credit points and receive a course certificate that contains the NPTEL and IISC logo making it E-Verifiable.

Semiconductor Devices and Circuits

Semiconductor Devices and Circuits

The Semiconductor Devices and Circuits online course is a faculty development program approved by the  ‘All India Council for Technical Education. It is made available by the ministry of education (Indian Government) through the Swayam platform. This online program is part of the Electrical, Electronics, and Communications Engineering and VLSI design section and is scheduled for a period of twelve weeks. 

This core course is developed by the National Program of Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) and the  Indian Institute of Science (IISC) and the certificates are authenticated by NPTEL and IISC. The course instructor is Sanjiv Sambandan, an assistant professor in the department of instrumentation and applied physics who will provide valuable insights on semiconductor devices and about the relation between the performance of circuits to the material and device behavior.

The Semiconductor Devices and Circuits program is for the students in their bachelor’s or master’s program to improve their skills and expertise in semiconductor technology.

Analog Electronic Circuit

Analog Electronic Circuit

The Analog Electronic Circuit programme offers in-depth knowledge of the most important objective for electronic circuits, that is, building an amplifier. The curriculum will also cover other circuit building blocks like power amplifiers and voltage regulators. Most devices will be exclusively used throughout the course.

The curriculum of the Analog Electronic Circuit course by Swayam includes topics such as MOSFET, differential amplifiers, voltage regulators, power amplifiers, and more. Moreover, the course will be taught by Prof. Shouribrata Chatterjee. He has completed his B.Tech degree in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology and his M.S. and PhD in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University, New York.

Candidates should have a working knowledge of basic circuit analysis. To attain the Analog Electronic Circuit certification, you will have to pass the certification exam with a minimum of 30 marks out of 75 and have an average assignment score of more than 10 out of 25. The final score will be the sum of your certification exam score and average assignment score.

In the Analog Communication course by Swayam, candidates will learn about the two building blocks of communication - Signals and Systems. They will understand how information is generated, how it can be transmitted to a distant user, and how the user interprets it. The information that needs to be transmitted and delivered to the user is known as a Signal.

Candidates will learn about different channels or media for transmission of signals. They will learn about the inherent imperfections of these media and how to combat and overcome them to facilitate effective communication. Also, they will learn about Noise, which is an unwanted, random signal that hinders communication.

Applied Electromagnetics for Engineers is an application-oriented course. It covers all the theoretical concepts of modern electromagnetics. There is a review of the necessary mathematics, including coordinate systems, vector fields, and vector analysis. It also covers an in-depth study of transmission lines. These lines play a crucial role in high-speed digital design and the signal integrity of PCBs.

The Applied Electromagnetics for Engineers training course explains the numerical and analytical solutions to the Poisson equation and Laplace equation. Candidates will learn about inductance calculations, quasi-static analysis of capacitors and the skin effect, and Maxwell equations.

Our  Master's of Science program  offers a choice of six primary focus areas. Each focus area has general requirements and selections of electives in subareas. With guidance from your advisor, you will design an individualized program to meet your career goals, and complete a Program of Studies Form.

Our  certificate programs  provide intensive graduate study of a narrow topic. At roughly one-third of the units of a Master's degree, you can complete a certificate program more quickly. Certificates include Digital System Design, Integrated Circuit Design and Technology, Digital Signal Processing and Machine Learning, Digital Signal Processing Theory, Fundamentals of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and RF and Applied Electromagnetics.

Teaching Assistant Information

The Department of Electrical Engineering offers TA positions yearly and students are hired every Spring for the following academic year.

Specific responsibilities may include supervision of undergraduate laboratory sections, assisting undergraduate students, and correcting papers. Course instructors will give TAs specific assignments in regards to running the lab sections. Please note that TAs are required to attend a mandatory TA training session at the beginning of the academic year.

To be considered as a TA you must show proof of your eligibility to work in the United States at Santa Clara University for the entire term of your TA agreement.
