College or G-League Route

Those who have progressed through/completed the mycareer story, which is the best way overall to take? It seems like the G-League is better, but going to college apparently gives you a faster route to the nba.

Gleague has a few bonding moments with a lot of past MyCareer characters (thankfully no B fresh) I'm probably going to try College soon to see if its any different from current gen
the badge progression is faster?
In G League do you still get to improve you VC potential per game? I was first round draft in college and was pulling in 750VC per game when I hit the NBA in a previous build. Do you get an opportunity to work up to a 750VC per NBA game status by taking the G League path?

In the locker room tunnel of an unremarkable minor league arena, the expanded narrative of NBA 2K21 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X leads to you thinking you made the wrong choice, turning professional immediately out of high school.
Your world-weary coach mutters at the trash left by hockey players from the night before. You might be starting, but he expects you to earn your playing time from the next game on out. Then you meet your teammates: the Tracy Morgan-esque Sheldon “ATM” Middleton; Shammy Wells, who’d shoot a four-pointer if they had a line for it; a Nosferatu-looking dude called Vlad the Impaler; and, of course, Jackson Ellis, a hype-man to himself.
All of these names are familiar to longtime NBA 2K players. They’ve been the career narrative antagonists going back to NBA 2K14 , with Ellis as the motor-mouthed measuring stick for the player’s original rise to fame. Visual Concepts got the band back together in the best way for MyCareer’s opening on new consoles, but as they kept the teammate reunion under wraps through the game’s Nov. 10 launch, mostly highlighting other improvements until then , I didn’t really know how much better the mode is until I took it for a spin over my Thanksgiving weekend.
Being introduced to these yo-yos was all it took for me to know I made the right choice taking a “select contract,” to the bus rides and taco promotions of the G League. I played all 10 games with a wide smile, even the first one, where I think the game nerfs all your attributes to rock bottom in order to contrive a bad start that’s key to the player’s personal journey.
Ellis skipped NBA 2K20 last year but has been in every MyCareer story since 2013, even making a cameo as an arena security officer in NBA 2K18 . He partnered with ATM the last time the series went to the G League, in NBA 2K19 , where the two billed themselves as the “Smoke and Mirrors” player combination. Hagi also appeared in that game, as a gameplay opponent only, with no cutscenes or speaking lines. He was a formidable post player from Eastern Europe whose shot-blocking pushes you to find open teammates instead. And Shammy Wells comes from NBA 2K18 , where he starred alongside the player character “DJ,” jacking up an unconscionable amount of contested three-point shots and getting in DJ’s face if he wasn’t passing him the ball enough.
All of these guys are back with their original actors at the mic. As one fan put it on Reddit , it feels like Visual Concepts was writing a sentimental farewell note to NBA 2K on last-generation consoles.
Love letter or victory lap, Visual Concepts earned it. 2K Sports’ in-house studio turned to these fictitious frenemies after their attempts to make real NBA stars into the player’s mentor turned in some embarrassing voice work ( looking at you, Eric Gordon ) for NBA 2K14 and 2K15 . Spike Lee directed a mentor-less story for NBA 2K16 ; Michael B. Jordan likewise soloed as player-character Justice Young in NBA 2K17 ; and teammates returned to cutscene dialogue in NBA 2K18 with the actor Cameron Bedford as Shammy Wells.
At this time, MyCareer’s story got a lot more engaging. Moreover, the series’ writers discovered a winning formula: take an antagonist, give them a face turn, and now you have a character for whom players will go to the mattresses. In NBA 2K20 , it was training partner Axel Walden (Blondy Baruti); he ends up making the league with the player character in an honestly heartwarming on-court finale. In NBA 2K21 , Hendrixx Cobb (Vince Washington) is the presumptive No. 1 pick and the player’s rival, but after going to college, the two develop a very close friendship, culminating in some lighthearted pre-draft antics together.
Of course, you miss a lot of that arc with Cobb if you take the G League route in the expanded NBA 2K21 . (Cobb and the player still part ways on a happy, mutually supportive note.) But it’s worth missing college to ride the bus as Vlad freestyles; to celebrate as ATM and Jackson make it back to the NBA on 10-day contracts, and then to come back together for a two-game finale whose opposing team I just can’t bring myself to spoil. Longtime players should be able to figure out the roster, though.
NBA 2K21, like the three games preceding it, has smartly written dialogue and well-acted scenes that are head-and-shoulders above the story modes attempted (and abandoned) by other sports video games. I sense that Visual Concepts has stuck with the storytelling because their writers understand an absolute truth of sports video gaming’s career modes: You have to give the player a character they can admire, someone they want to be, or someone they will care about if it’s not themselves on the screen.
Visual Concepts and NBA 2K21 do more than that; they give the player-character friends you’ll care about, too.

NBA 2K22: Should you choose college or G-League for MyCareer?
![g league or college 2k21 A snapshot from MyCareer as seen in NBA 2K20. [Source: IGN]](https://staticg.sportskeeda.com/editor/2021/09/03c14-16312690278793-800.jpg)
NBA 2K22 has finally launched and one of the most hyped features in the game is MyCareer. Gamers can experience the journey an athlete goes through to get to the NBA and get a glimpse of the glamor-filled life.
Once you create your MyPlayer in NBA 2K22, you will be dropped straight into The City where you will face the first quest: "Lay of the Land: New City". The new combination of MyCareer and The City in NBA 2K22 will lead gamers to arguably the biggest decision in the game: choosing a college program, joining the NBA G-League or declaring straight for the NBA Draft.

Should you choose College for MyCareer in NBA 2K22?
![g league or college 2k21 The list of College choices in NBA 2K22 [Source: Dexerto]](https://staticg.sportskeeda.com/editor/2021/09/30091-16312699637942-800.jpg)
The most common route to the NBA is enrolling in a college program and NBA 2K22 offers only NCAA Division I schools. The colleges you will be offered within the game are:
- Florida Gators - University of Florida
- UCLA Bruins - University of California, Los Angeles
- Villanova Wildcats - Villanova University
- Oklahoma Sooners - University of Oklahoma
- Michigan State Spartans - Michigan State University
- Gonzaga Bulldogs - Gonzaga University
- Syracuse Orangemen - Syracuse University
- UConn Huskies - University of Connecticut
- Texas Tech Red Raiders - Texas Tech University
- West Virginia Mountaineers - West Virginia University
Each college will give you a specific boost or a total of four Bonus to Badge Point Potentials. These will be in either 'Playmaking', 'Finishing', 'Shooting' and/or 'Defense/Rebound'. You can choose which college suits your player and gives you the boost you need.
For example, Michigan State Spartans, the alma mater of Magic Johnson and Draymond Green , will give you a +4 in 'Playmaking'. Alternately, UCLA Bruins , the alma mater of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Russell Westbrook , will give you +2 in 'Finishing' and 'Shooting' each. Florida Gators, on the other hand, will provide you with a +1 in all four categories.

The advantages of choosing College in NBA 2K22 MyCareer
NBA 2K22 will instantly highlight the four advantages of choosing the College route. You can go through the same process that many players have chosen and build your reputation as a national champion.
1) Jump directly into the single-elimination tournament and earn additional badge points by winning the national championship.
2) Gain more fans by playing on a national stage and proving you're a top prospect.
3) Earn attribute boosts for the tournament by attending practices that teach you key skills for your build.
4) Maintain amateur status, allowing you to sign with the G League after college. You cannot attend college after going to the G League.
You can experience, for instance, what it was like for Carmelo Anthony to lead Syracuse to the NCAA title. Even if you don't win, you can establish your name as an excellent prospect in the nation the way Stephen Curry did with an unassuming Davidson Wildcats team.
The most important point in the aformentioned is arguably the fourth one which tells you that you can maintain amateur status. Many players can choose the G-League after College but you certainly cannot attend college after you've already played in the G-League.
Should you choose G-League for MyCareer in NBA 2K22?
In reality, the G-League route is certainly a cheaper option for players if they cannot afford to pay for college or don't have a scholarship. Nonetheless, in NBA 2K22, one can choose the G-League option and forgo college to become a pro-athlete from the get-go.
It gives you NBA-level experience and allows you to work on your brand, fame and interview skills, among other things. You will be playing for Team Ignite in NBA 2K22 like the 2021 NBA Draft rookies Jalen Green and Jonathan Kuminga.
The advantages of choosing G-League in NBA 2K22 MyCareer
By choosing the G-League option in NBA 2K22 MyCareer, these are the ways in which you stand to gain:
1) Earn a permanent 5% MyPoints accelerator to speed up the process of upgrading your MyPlayer.
2) Pursue endorsement opportunities on off days to earn VC (Virtual Currency) and start building your Personal Brand.
3) Prepare yourself for the league by playing against NBA-caliber talent.
4) Meet with the press to take control of your narrative and practice your interviewing skills.
Although the advantages sound swell, especially the MyPoints accelerator, the disadvantages are evident in this method as well. For starters, if you don't perform well, you can get cut from the team and your first G-League Ignite contact in the game will tell you so. Moreover, if you underperform, you will reach the NBA slower than your college counterparts.
Finally, what should you choose?
![g league or college 2k21 NBA Draft as seen in NBA 2K21 MyCareer [Source: USA Today]](https://staticg.sportskeeda.com/editor/2021/09/1a6ce-16312728948166-800.jpg)
There is a third and fourth option that players can certainly explore. Before we talk about them, it is important to keep in mind that you don't have to jump into one of these choices right away. Just like any other game, you can grind The City and improve your game before ultimately choosing College or G-League.
The third option within the game is declaring for the NBA draft right away. However, you will obviously have a much lower draft stock even if you grind and boost your player before doing so. Naturally, established college players and G-League athletes will get picked higher in the draft. You will see right away that your player is projected to go late in the second round of the draft if you choose this option.
The fourth option, and the one we recommend, is choosing College and then joining the G-League to get the ultimate experience of both in NBA 2K22. When you finally do decide to declare for the draft, you'll be experienced and will likely go high in the draft.

NBA 2K22: College, G League, or NBA Draft in MyCAREER and The City?
You'll be facing a big decision early on this year

NBA 2K22 has arrived, and integration between The City and MyCAREER has brought up a big early decision that players will face.
If you're struggling with choosing College, G League, or the NBA Draft, we've got all the details so you can make the call that's right for you in NBA 2K22.
Latest - How to use your MyPLAYER in MyTEAM
Before we get to the MyCAREER details you're looking for, new players may not realize that your MyPLAYER can actually be used in your MyTEAM lineup.
Especially if you're still earning cards and building out your collection, using your MyCAREER player can make a huge difference early on.
We've got full details here on how you can get your MyPLAYER card in MyTEAM .
NBA 2K22: Should you choose College, G League, or NBA Draft in MyCAREER and The City?
If you're playing next gen NBA 2K22 on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S and find yourself dropped into The City after creating your MyPLAYER, it won't be long before you're facing the first big decision of the game.
Lay of the Land is the first quest you'll receive in The City, and it'll task you with setting a course that will influence the rest of your experience.
Your MyCAREER could feel very different depending on whether you choose College, G League, or the NBA Draft, but there's actually a fourth very valid option.
Believe it or not, you can absolutely choose not to make a decision. Your MyPLAYER starts very low in ratings, and you can choose to instead spend time in The City building them up before jumping to one of these big places.
However, these choices expect you to be lower rated as things get started, so there's absolutely no harm in making that call right from the jump to get things rolling.
Advantages to College and College Teams
The traditional option is still here in NBA 2K22, and you can take your MyPLAYER to College to chart your MyCAREER path that way.
You'll find these details out if you go speak to the College contact introduced in the initial Lay of the Land quest, but NBA 2K22 emphasizes the following College advantages:
- Jump directly into the single-elimination tournament and earn additional badge points by winning the national championship.
- Gain more fans by playing on a national stage and proving you're a top prospect.
- Earn attribute boosts for the tournament by attending practices that teach you key skills for your build.
- Maintain amateur status, allowing you to sign with the G League after college. You cannot attend college after going to the G.
That final detail is perhaps most crucial, in that College is the option which gives you the most remaining options down the line.
If you're hoping to be a top draft pick, going to College is a great choice, and you can even combo it with G League to further guarantee that top prospect positioning.
However, one of the big disadvantages is that choosing College will keep you in amateur status and not allow you to access endorsement opportunities to boost VC yet.
Advantages to G League (Team Ignite)
With the G League gaining popularity among real-world NBA prospects, it's no surprise that it's a prime option in The City and MyCAREER for NBA 2K22.
Once you go speak to the contact with Team Ignite, you'll get the following in-game details on advantages to joining the G League from the start:
- Earn a permanent 5% MyPOINTS accelerator to speed up the process of upgrading your MyPLAYER.
- Pursue endorsement opportunities on off days to earn VC and start building your Personal Brand.
- Prepare yourself for the league by playing against NBA-caliber talent.
- Meet with the press to take control of your narrative and practice your interviewing skills.
The most tangible benefit is the MyPOINTS accelerator, which will absolutely help you boost ratings faster from the start, but this all comes with risk.
G League is emphasized early as a tougher challenge, and you're told by the first Team Ignite contact that being cut from the team if you underperform is possible, though we haven't been able to confirm that in-game yet.
You'll also have the major advantage of being able to start earning VC and building your brand without having to leap all the way to the NBA and face that additional challenge.
Advantages to declaring for the NBA Draft
While the game doesn't give you definitive disadvantages and advantages to going straight into the NBA Draft, largely because of the work put into the College and G League paths they surely want players to experience, it's not an option you should ignore.
If you choose to go straight to the NBA Draft, whether it's right as your MyCAREER starts or even after doing a little grinding in The City , you're likely to have a much lower draft stock and rating than if you take another path.
That could actually be a boon for you, as the likelihood of being drafted by a better NBA team drastically goes up due to struggling franchises getting the earliest draft picks.
If you want to end up on a team that's already in NBA Playoff contention, and not one that will need you to be a massive star to push them towards it, declaring early could make that happen.
It's not guaranteed, as you could still go in the second round to a less successful franchise, but the odds are in your favor compared to bolstered draft stock from College or G League.
Which one is the best choice for Lay of the Land?
Ultimately it will still come down to personal preference, but the most complete and extensive experience in MyCAREER and The City will come from starting in College.
You can actually choose all the options, in a way. You can do some early grinding in The City , head to College, sign with the G League after graduation, and only then declare for the NBA Draft.
With that path, you'll get the best of all worlds and really get the most out of a single run in MyCAREER for NBA 2K22.
Each other path has value, so don't feel like you've made the wrong call by leaning in another direction, just keep in mind what will be different if you pick G League or go right to the NBA Draft.
NBA 2K22: Should you go to college or the G League in MyCareer?
School, or the pros?

- Guides NBA 2K22

Image via 2K Sports
Should you go to college? It’s not just something that high school students need to consider, but also NBA 2K22 players. 2K22 offers MyCareer players a couple of different options before heading to the NBA, as users can either go to the NCAA, the G League, or decide to do both. What should you do? Let’s go over the perks of going to each, plus some of our thoughts on the process.
Should you go to college or the G League in MyCareer?
Here are the perks for each option:
- Earn permanent 5% MyPoints accelerator to speed up process of upgrading your MyPlayer
- Pursue endorsement opportunities on off days to earn VC and start building your Personal Brand
- Prepare yourself for the league by playing against NBA-caliber talent
- Meet the press to take control of your narrative and practice your interviewing skills
College (NCAA)
- Jump directly into the single-elimination tournament (March Madness) and earn additional badge points by winning the national championship
- Gain more fans by playing on a national stage and proving you’re a top prospect
- Earn attribute boosts for the tournament by attending practices that teach you key skills in your build
- Maintain amateur status, allowing you to sign with the G League after college (you can’t attend college after going to the G)

Our recommendation
It’s a tough call, as both do offer some quality perks. If you want VC and to earn MyPoints fast, the G League is for you. On the other hand, college can be a great way for you to to grind for progress towards badges, as well as for building that brand.
It’s also worth pointing out that you can’t go to college if you join the G League right away, You can, however, go to the G League if you choose college. So, you might want to try the university route at first, and then transition to the G to get that MyPoints accelerator.
The choice is ultimately up to you. But, you will need to weight the benefits of each, and figure out what you want out of your pre-NBA experience before becoming a pro.

NBA 2K21 next-gen impressions: Coming off the bench
NBA 2K21 gets a facelift and new features on PS5 and Xbox Series X, but is it enough to redeem the mediocre basketball sim?

NBA 2K21 was one of the handful of games that had a full next-gen enhancement ready to go on launch day. Adding revamped graphics, as well as several notable new features, NBA 2K21 actually seemed like a significant upgrade from its last-gen counterpart. The game even has a new cover, with Zion Williamson taking up the mantle for next-gen. However, upgrades were not free unless players purchased the $100 Mamba Edition. If not, they’d need to buy the game in full for $70. After spending a considerable amount of time with NBA 2K21 on next-gen it’s hard to say that what’s here really warrants the asking price.

As with nearly every game on the next-gen consoles, NBA 2K21 loads extremely quickly. Fans of the series have grown accustomed to picking up their phone and scrolling through social media when loading into games or swapping modes, so the quicker speeds are a nice treat. While playing on the Xbox Series X, I never had to wait longer than a few seconds to get into a game. Navigating through the MyCareer menu, hitting continue, and immediately being put on the court felt like magic.
Overall, the load speeds of the next-gen consoles make 2K21 a better experience. Hardcore players are used to marathoning games, and these snappy load times make everything simpler. Even loading into the game’s online modes, which have been notoriously slow in the past.
Look good, feel good, play good

NBA 2K21’s graphics get a facelift in its next-gen version. Already regarded for its high-level recreation of the NBA’s biggest stars, there is a noticeable step up in quality. The lighting is better, and the faces look much more lifelike. Some of the characters in cutscenes still look a little rough, but the players themselves look better than ever.
As far as mechanics, 2K21 doesn’t reinvent the wheel with its next-gen version. However, the developers used this opportunity to add some more unique animations to the game. This includes some new animations for alley-oops, which are incredibly satisfying to pull off. I also felt like dribbling and ball movement were just smoother overall when playing on Xbox Series X.
More ways to be a star

One of the more welcome changes in next-gen 2K21 is the addition of the G League. Now, when coming out of high school, players can choose to take the traditional route to the NBA and go to college, or enter the G League. While college will provide the players with more exposure and fans, the G League will help them hone their skills faster, with increased progression on badges and abilities.
2K21 also fixes one of the frustrating issues I brought up in my review, as players can now change the camera angle in high school, college, and the G League. Despite some solid changes and additions, MyCareer still feels incredibly grindy. VC is hard to come by unless you dump a part-time job’s worth of hours into the game, or crack open your wallet. Players can now hop into The W, a mode that lets them create their own WNBA superstar. It's an awesome piece of representation to an often ignored basketball league, though the mode isn't nearly as fleshed out as 2K21's other core modes.
The City is a brand new edition in NBA 2K21 on next-gen. Composed of a bunch of smaller parks and areas, The City is practically a massive version of The Neighborhood. There’s more courts, which is nice, but the pros stop there. You still have to buy a ball for 25k VC just to play with friends on a private court, and the servers are still really shoddy.
Final buzzer

NBA 2K21 on next-gen sees a lot of improvements to the basketball sim, but ironically only improves the areas of the game that were already really good. Looking at our review of the original release of NBA 2K21, nearly all of my cons are still present. MyCareer’s story remains shallow, the online servers are still aggressively mediocre, and microtransactions are still intrusive. When you add the fact that 2K didn’t offer free upgrades for existing owners, forcing them to either buy the $100 version or purchase it independently for $70, it’s hard to say that NBA 2K21 on next-gen is the much-needed redemption for a continuously disappointing franchise.

With the Final Four now set on both the men’s and women’s side, it’s probably time to give you a heads up that SkillzFromThe6 has been doing his usual impressive work updating NBA 2K21 to get a whole heaping pile of college basketball rosters into the game on various platforms. He has created March Madness iterations for the PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X. These go beyond just names. He works on coaches, arenas, CAPs, jerseys, and so on. Outside of some PC mods, this is about as good as it gets to nailing down a men’s college basketball roster in NBA 2K21 .
NBA 2K21 College Basketball Rosters Information
There are some differences between the rosters (some consoles have more teams than others) because there is no easy way to simply share the rosters between consoles. Skillz really went above and beyond to get his work out on as many platforms as he did, but you still need to dig in and see how they differ. Regardless of what console you’re on, here is how to find the rosters:
- Search “SkillazKill” or “SkillazDaGreat” and press R2 (or RT on Xbox) to find every team’s jerseys/arenas.
- If you see the wrong jersey/arena for a team, download a team design not on roster and re-download mine.
- CAPs will be fully updated (Appearances, Signatures, Ratings & Tendencies)
- He puts zone defense for many teams to make it more college-like.
- Includes a G League Ignite squad
Quick Option:
MyNBA > 2K Share Scenarios > Create New > Search “SkillazKill”
Specific Teams Option:
Step 1: Go to “MyNBA”
Step 2: Click on “MyNBA”
Step 3: ONLY Green Highlight “Setup Options” > Triangle (Toggle) > Remove Fantasy Draft & Customize Salary Cap
Step 4: User Created Roster > Search SkillazKill or College Roster 2K21
Step 5: Add any teams you want from the Divisions (list below)
Season Length: 29/35 Games (optional) Quarter Length: 10 minutes (optional) Simulated Quarter Length: 10 minutes (optional) Normalize Played to Sim Stats/Minutes: On Playoff (March Madness) Rounds: 1 Game Each Negotiated Contracts: Off Trade Logic: Off Injuries: Off (optional)

Step 8: Square to “Select All Teams”
Step 9: Front Office > Team Relocation > 2K Share Team Designs > Download Team Designs > Triangle to search “SkillazKill” > Bookmark This Creator
Step 10: Download Respective team
Step 11: Repeat Step 9 & 10 for all teams

Nba 2k22 should you pick college or g league for mycareer.
What should be your first MyCareer choice?
The very first thing you are going to do in NBA 2K22 is to choose between College Basketball or G League, but which is the best? We will tell you about it.
NBA 2K22 MyCareer is the beginning of a new epic story with less linear events that allow players to have control over their career from the earlier stages of the story.
- CHECK THIS OUT : How To Dunk Using The Dunk Meter In NBA 2K22
One of the key decisions in this game mode is whether to move into G League after high school or stick with the academic atmosphere and continue the career in college.
NBA 2K22 MyCareer: College or G League?
First of all, let me make it clear that no matter which one you choose, you will be able to make your way to NBA. Choosing between the two options is more about gaining some passive skills and having the bigger opportunity for boosting certain parameters of your MyPlayer.
College Benefits:
- You will jump directly into single-elimination tournament and earn additional badge points by winning the national championship.
- Gain more fans by playing on a national stage and proving you are a top prospect.
- Earn attributes boosts for the tournament by attending practices that teach you key skills for your build.
- Maintain Ameatur status, allowing you to sign with G League after College.
G League Benefits:
- Earn permenant 5% MyPoints accelarator to speed up the process of upgrading your MyPlayer.
- Pursue indorsement opportunities on off days to earn VC and start building your Personal Brand.
- Prepare yourself for the league by playing against NBA-caliber players.
- Meet the press to take control of your narrative and practice your interviewing skills.
Now, Which One Is Better?
Going with College is the same traditional NBA 2K MyCareer experience, but the Ultimate one, since you can qualify for G League and then get drafted for NBA. So, if you want to play in all three levels of basketball in NBA 2K, you should choose College.
On the other hand, G League is more like a shortcut that could lead you to early fame in the game, however, it might take you a bit longer to get yourself into the NBA.
So, if you want to get to NBA as soon as possible, you should go with College basketball and then skip G League for getting drafted for an NBA team, based on your college performance. Although you would reach NBA sooner this way, you will start your NBA season with pretty low stats, which means you should work very hard to make progress.
On the other hand, if you want to start your NBA season with higher stats, we suggest you beginning with College, then moving to G League, and then transferring to NBA.
Now, if you still want higher stats in NBA but don't have time for the ultimate experience, go with G League.
NBA 2K22 is now available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Nintendo Switch, Stadia, and PC.

Nba 2k21: new next-gen franchise mode feature has unbelievable depth.
With the next-gen version of NBA 2K21, it appears 2K has again re-defined the meaning of depth in a franchise mode.
MyLeague, MyLeague Online and MyGM are no more. The large modes have been morphed into one humongous option with a whirlwind of customization called MyNBA.
I was given an advanced look at the feature’s blog written by NBA 2K Executive Producer Erick Boenisch. The blog is massive, but I have broken it down to several bullet points.
Take a look.
MyNBA Setup Options
- Fantasy Draft: Self Explanatory
- Customize League Rules: Lottery, Standings, All-Star, Shot Clock, Foul Out, Lane Violation, Eight-Second Violation, Backcourt Violation, Playoffs, Possession Arrow, Bonus, Goaltending, Back to the Basket, Sudden Death Overtime, Free Throws, Salary Cap, Trades, Draft, Contracts, and Elam Ending, however you want them from the jump. In case you’re unaware of what the Elam Ending is, here is a solid explanation and example. Most hoops fans watched the NBA All-Star Game in February and saw the stipulations that were added to honor Kobe Bryant. There was a winning score of 24 added to the leading teams total, and that was set as the amount needed to win the game. In the All-Star Game, it was 157, but it could be any score in your MyNBA games. I think this is an awesome concept to include in a franchise mode, and no other sports title is delivering this kind of innovation.
- Custom Roster: User-created rosters locally or downloaded from 2K Share.
- Customize League: Realignment and total teams included. MyNBA leagues, whether online or offline, can be between 12 and 36 teams.
- Customize Salary Cap: Raise, lower or eliminate
- Customize Simple and Advanced Settings: Customizing various league structure details that affect the way your MyNBA will run.
- Customizing the CBA: (Collective Bargaining Agreement). The following can be turned off individually or collectively: Dead Cap (released players counting against your salary cap if not picked up on waivers), Stepien Rule (limit on trading away 1st-round picks in consecutive years), 30/60/90 Day Rules (limits on trading away recently-signed players), Restricted Free Agents (ability for teams to match offers on RFAs), Trade Finances (requirements to match salaries on trades), and Waiver Rules (requirement for 48-hour waiver period).
- Role-Playing Elements: This is the MyGM portion of the new MyNBA. Now, you can choose whether or not each of the teams in the league will have access to: Conversations, GM Scoring, Skills Upgrades, Getting Tasks from the owner, general manager, etc., as well as Morale & Chemistry. All 12-36 teams can have access to these options.
- Ranked: The MyGM-related Ranked feature is back (leaderboards). It’s designed to gauge how well you’ve performed in MyNBA, but quite honestly, I’m struggling to find out how 2K will ever implement this is a franchise mode.
- Budget and Finances: Salary Cap, Hard Cap, and Luxury Tax options are turned on or off, plus Price Changes and User-Controlled Budgets, which for the last generation were features that we had kept exclusive to the MyGM experience and didn’t allow for MyLEAGUE or MyLEAGUE Online. You will be able to set a team’s prices for tickets and concessions, or a team’s budgets, whether or not you’re playing the game with any GM features on.
- Play With Friends: This is the new MyLeague Online. It has ALL of the same features as an offline MyLeague, and it can be trimmed down to as few as 12 teams in the event you don’t want any cpu-controlled teams. This should make it easier to have all-human leagues. Online leagues will have the ability to turn the RPG elements on or off as well.
- Automate Offseason Time Periods: This allows you to easily simulate aspects of the offseason. Retirements, League Business, Staff Signing, Drafting, Free Agency, and Player Progression can be turned on or off individually or as a group.
- Start From Today: As before, you can start the league from the beginning of the regular season or the previous offseason. 2K says the option to start from today won’t be available at launch, and that’s because the season won’t have started, but we now know it will begin on December 22, barring a setback.
- G League: 2K has finally allowed gamers the ability to have full control over G-League games. You can play every game on the schedule of every G-League team. In addition, you can sim or simcast each of them as well.
- Revamped Boom/Bust System: 2K explained what they’ve done to upgrade this system. “We introduced a simple Boom/Bust system to the game last year that added a little randomness to the potential of the prospects, but have given it a major facelift this year and completely revamped it. Younger players in the league will now have a more dynamic growth path using the Boom/Bust system. Players can have low and high-potential floors, low and high-potential ceilings, and a probability to boom, bust, or hit somewhere in between. In addition, until age 23, we will continue to determine the player’s potential based on multiple factors to make it so that every player will still be exciting during the developmental years. The same player could have wildly different growth paths in each save, so keeping up with scouting prospects after they’re in the league will be critical to building a dynasty. We’ve also revamped player generation to better leverage the Boom/Bust system to make for more “interesting” players to scout and further enhanced draft storylines, but as always, all of this can be edited if you want to sculpt your ideal prospects.”
- Additional Assistant Coach: The new assistant coach was added to more closer resemble an NBA coaching staff. This new assistant will impact your players’ performances.
- 2K Share Setup: This is a lot like sliders for a league, but because of what it allows you to arrange and share with the community (league rules, teams, rosters, etc.), it’s even more. If someone creates a different league, or even a college basketball experience, they will be able to easily share the entire thing with one click. Difficult to quantify how cool that can be for users.
- 2K Share Scenarios: Similar to Share Setup, but the best way to differentiate them is to say Scenarios are what users share after they have begun a MyNBA journey, and they’re essentially sharing the progress to allow other users to hop in at the saved point. Here is what the blog says about this feature, which is more a community-created challenge system: “we wanted to give the community members a way to upload save progress in their MyNBAs, where they’ve set up different scenarios and challenges for other community members to try and overcome. For instance, maybe you’ve setup a scenario where you’re in control of the Clippers and down 3 games to 0 in the Western Conference Finals against the rival Los Angeles Lakers. And you want to see if other members of the community will take on the challenge of coming back from a 3-0 deficit against LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Playoff Rondo, and the rest of the Lakers crew. Scenarios like this, and whatever else the most imaginative minds within the community can create, can now be easily shared for others to play.”

NBA 2K21 Tattoos
- Tattoos on CREATED PLAYERS!!: This is a feature many creators have been wanting for the past few years, and it has finally been added back thanks to the extra resources and tech provided by the next-gen consoles.
- New Hairstyles are in For CAPs: This time, the new hairstyles are available for all created players.
- Slide Navigation: A quicker and easier way to navigate through the modes windows. For anyone who has ever worked on a major project within MyLeague, you’ll appreciate something like this that seems small, but can be a major time and aggravation saver.
The list of features is so long, I was almost overwhelmed by the volume of things that are possible. Having the ability to simply flip some switches off and others on, makes it all consumable and potentially the best possible console franchise mode experience.
That said, nothing is ever perfect. There could be an issue with execution–especially with the online components–but beyond that, here are a few other smaller issues to point out.
I’ve ranked these issues from most impacting to least.
- Face Sculpting Hasn’t Been Updated : Some creators were hoping to get a bit more freedom with the face-sculpting options. I spoke with someone from the 2K development team and I was told: “we kept face sculpting the same for this year to focus on other elements that were a little more in need of love, BUT, the new hairstyles will work on guys in MyNBA.” This feature is missed even more because there is still no image uploader for player faces.
- No Year-to-Year Saves...We Think: Year-to-year saves is the one franchise feature that a series has that 2K still hasn’t introduced. MLB The Show delivered pure greatness when they unveiled this back in 2013. Perhaps 2K could set up 2K21 to marry with 2K22 in this way, but it’s nowhere to be found in the blog.
- It Appears Court Customization is Still Limited to the Same Floor Areas: PC modders have found ways to customize more of the floor, but current-gen 2K and previous versions still only allow customization in certain areas.
The Last Word
In Boenisch’s closing thoughts, he wrote the following:
“One of the main things we wanted to do with our first entry on these new consoles was to not take anything away from our franchise players. All too often, a new console generation means starting from scratch for franchise fans and having to start getting features back with each subsequent release of the game. We didn’t want to take that approach this year and with MyNBA, we have given our players everything that we had on the last console generation, plus a whole lot more. The second main thing we wanted to do with MyNBA is lay the groundwork for the next 6+ years. We feel that by combining the previous modes into the all-encompassing MyNBA, it’ll make it easier to add features down the road. Rather than trying to split time with three different modes that have varied requirements, everything we do will be for the MyNBA brand”
I haven’t played the game or this expansive mode as of yet, but that last paragraph proves there are people working in the gaming industry who understand the importance of turning out a solid product–especially in these tough times. Now, let’s just hope it all works.
