Personal Statement - Environmental Science 1

Environmental Science Personal Statement I turned to her and asked "Why do you love your job so much?" Her reply was simple, yet powerful, "I am able to help something which is defenceless". This exchange of words took place while flying to Colorado, speaking to a woman whose job it was to work alongside oil companies to research their environmental impact on the physical landscape around them. As the conversation continued over the duration of the flight, I became inspired by the projects she had worked upon and started to realise that a subject I had enjoyed taking at school could progress into further education, and on to higher education. My love for the environment has stemmed from my appreciation for the natural power that it holds, and how something we have taken for granted, such as water, can cause a catastrophe like the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. This, coupled with an inspiring Geography teacher in secondary school has led me to explore these topics further through education and personal interest. The media often only expresses the social and medical impacts that natural disasters have on our society, such as the recent earthquakes in Haiti and the outbreak of Cholera. They focus less on the physical impacts these events can have to our environment, for instance Mount Pinatubo's eruption in 1991 having an effect on the global climate. I am particularly captivated by volcanoes and the processes of an eruption. My interest in this area increased after studying the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption and looking at the events surrounding and during the eruption, such as the pyroclastic flow. Understanding why these events happen has intrigued me. My enthusiasm for skiing has allowed me to travel to different environments, such as the Rocky Mountains and Glaciers in Europe, and see the earth's formation in a visual perspective which can only be described as awe-inspiring. I have also travelled to Belize, and experienced the incredible 'Great Blue Hole' located near the Lighthouse Reef. My experiences with different environments has given me an unconditional respect for the power of our earth. I am currently attending an Access to Higher Education; Social Sciences course, on which I study Environmental Studies, Biology, Sociology and Psychology. This course has not only provided me with the educational requirements I need to progress into higher education, but has allowed me to develop my personal skills in organisation, independent study, essay and report writing, ICT skills and the ability to embrace new concepts. Alongside my studies, I have committed my time to reading various environmental research journals and articles, and watch documentaries, including Planet Earth and Blue Planet. Making myself aware of environmental issues and the development of the earth has assisted me in understanding in more depth the subjects that I study. The opportunity to study at University will allow me to understand the environment in a more advanced manner and develop my understanding in a topic that I am fascinated by. This will empower me to focus my academic studies into an area which I love in more depth and which will give me the technical skills and knowledge I require to progress further in this subject than I would without University education. As the environment and the impacts we have on it is becoming an increasing worry for our society, studying in this subject area at university will put me into a position to be able to help understand, research and combat these issues. Being able to study the earth's environment will not only fulfil a desire I have to further understand the natural processes, but allow me to be a part of a movement that will inspire a younger generation, like I was inspired, to be educated on the environment and proceed to carry on the work of the many scientists, researchers and other personnel to understand our planet and create a more sustainable and resourceful way of living.

Comments I am a mature student (21) and decided to go back to education to gain a university standard education. Due to the courses around me, I was forced to take a Social Sciences Access to HE course rather than a pure Sciences course, which obviously was less than optimal for a pure science based subject.

I did not receive an offer to Durham, which was to be expected and withdrew my application from Southampton due to not being impressed when the course on my interview day.I received offers from UEA, Portsmouth and Leicester, but decided overall to go with Portsmouth due to the content of the course and the possibility of continuing to do a masters at the university which is extremely interesting to me (Masters in Geological and Environmental Hazards).

Comments from both UEA and Southampton on my interview day reguarded my personal statement as 'Excellent' and commenting on the introduction into the personal statement as eye-catching. I attempted to put as much of my interests to do with the subject in my personal statement, including some personal experiences. I also wanted to express the passion I have for the Physical side of the subject, Rather than the human side.

Show More During my first semester at the University of Southern California, I took a Women in International Development class after reading about Wangari Mathai’s life and how science was utilized as a means for empowering the poor and women as a result changing an entire country’s government. With encouragement from my professor and inspiration from Mathai, I decided to further explore an interdisciplinary education, leading me to my chosen field: environmental studies. Becoming a scientific diver changed my educational direction. Master’s degree environmental science, woman applicant from kuwait, additional application material.

Cleaning up Kuwait and Getting it Moving in the Personal Statement for Graduate School

(Q) Do you think that the lifestyle of the inhabitants of your town or city reflects behavior that is in line with the concept of sustainable development? In your opinion, what should be improved?

As a close observer of development in my city, Kuwait City, I have become increasingly aware of numerous noble attempts in a variety of areas, most notably architecture, to implement development that is sustainable and at harmony with the environment. The government, however, almost always supports the status quo and the bottom line, and adapting sustainable measures are often expensive. Change itself is controversial in Kuwait.

From my perspective as a woman professional and an avid student of economic development, the inherently conservative and brutally patriarchic nature of Kuwaiti society works to actively diminish the importance that is ascribed to development generally speaking and sustainable development in particular. From my perspective, women – heretofore largely excluded from the workplace – are the central key to development and without their widespread inclusion in the workforce, sustainable development in a globalized market will be impossible. Kuwait from my perspective suffers from a chronic lack of diversity in countless ways, in the workforce, the marketplace, much of this having to do with the fact that our entire economy rests on the foundation of oil, not a renewable resource.

This myopic vision of Kuwait as tied to fossil fuel extraction has resulted in environmentally destructive and socially disharmonizing methods of development, the costs of which Kuwaiti society will pay for generations to come for the foreseeable future. If we do not diversify our economy and our workforce and modernize in sustainable ways, our country will fall further behind the development curve and be unable to assimilate and compete in the global economy.

The government of Kuwait needs to implement strict environmental protections that rein in the contamination resulting from a host of industrial processes involved in oil production. The catastrophic methods that are currently utilized by the oil industry have turned Kuwait into one of the most polluted countries on Earth, with some of the highest rates on the planet of childhood health complications associated with poor air quality. The Kuwaiti government is guilty of promoting and implementing systemic, multi-generational sickness and death at worst, and complicit at least. How could the public galvanise themselves into an environmentally conscious mode of behaviour if the political forces elected to represent them are wholly complicit in the destruction of our environment?

Kuwait is in desperate need of many of the most modest of public investments in environmental welfare, such as community litter protocols and education programs, beach cleanup campaigns, and litter enforcement in particular. Of the few public parks that Kuwait has built for community recreation, fewer still are regularly maintained. Even then, cheap labor picks up the trash left behind by visitors. We need a public recycling campaign to capitalise on the enormous amounts of reusable plastics that cover our streets and choke our landfillls. Currently, there is only one private organisation that is making any efforts at recycling business and it is most limited.

The government needs invest proactively in the necessary infrastructure that would allow us to safely purify tap water so that bottled water is not the only option. Even the plastic bag surcharges or bans that have been implemented in other countries and municipalities are not yet seen in Kuwait. Yet, even these modest reforms undertaken in other parts of the world, if implemented in Kuwait, would have a favorable impact on the situation, serving to some extent to protect our communities from the harmful effects of environmental negligence, triggering consciousness raising on the part of the population so that they would learn to embrace and better appreciate the benefits of a clean, safe environment.

Sample 1st paragraph ms management information systems, environmental studies major.

I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Studies because this is where my principal passion lies in life, protecting our mother earth at the same time that we are able to thrive in sustainable ways, with human dignity. It is for this reason that my heart is set on a professional course that enables me to give me all to the cause of sustainable development in environmentally friendly ways, especially with respect to the Developing World. I fully realize, however, thankfully, that there are many applicants to positions of responsibility with NGOs that address these issues, and those who are selected tend to have earned a Master’s Degree and thereby have more to offer. I want to build a professional life focus not only on protecting our environment, but, more specifically, developing the kinds of innovation in information management that will continue to propel creative advancement in our struggle into the next generation. It is for this reason that I see your distinguished program at XXU to be the optimal springboard upon which to build a distinguished career as a soldier for the environment in the private sector, managing our information.

The need for companies to comply with environmental laws and regulations is expected to contribute to the demand for environmental scientists and some geoscientists, especially hydrologists and engineering geologists. Issues of water conservation, deteriorating coastal environments, and rising sea levels also will stimulate employment growth of these workers. As the population increases and moves to more environmentally sensitive locations, environmental scientists and hydrologists will be needed to assess building sites for potential geologic hazards and to address issues of pollution control and waste disposal. Hydrologists and environmental scientists also will be needed to conduct research on hazardous wastesites to determine the impact of hazardous pollutants on soil and groundwater so engineers can design remediation systems. The need for environmental scientists and geoscientists who understand both the science and engineering aspects of waste remediation is growing. An expected increase in highway building and other infrastructure projects will be an additional source of jobs for engineering geologists.

Employment of environmental scientists and geoscientists is more sensitive to changes in governmental energy or environmental policy than employment of other scientists. If environmental regulations are rescinded or loosened, job opportunities will shrink. On the other hand, increased exploration for energy sources will result in improved job opportunities for geoscientists.

The Federal Government is expected to increasingly outsource environmental services to private consulting firms. This lack of funding will affect mostly geoscientists performing basic research.

Get to know about your program:

Try to gather details about your university’s specific environmental science program. Also, do general reading about environmental science and enhance your awareness. This will help you in the writing stage.

Practice talking:

Once you have a mental picture of what you are going to write in the introduction and body paragraphs, speak out those points loudly and see how it sounds. Does it represent you in a natural way? Doing this exercise a few times is a good preparation method.

Get familiar with the format:

Get familiar with the format for writing your personal statement. You can do this by reviewing a couple of environmental science personal statement examples. Also, check whether your institute has given any specific format to use.

Prepare an outline and write:

Based on the points and format you have found out, prepare an outline first. After that, develop your essay slowly building on the outline. This method will ensure all points are properly addressed.

Proofread, edit and finalize:

Once completed, read through your statement carefully word by word at least four to five times. Correct all the mistakes. Simplify ambiguous sentences. It is good to have your essay reviewed by someone else before finalizing it.

Example 1 – personal Statement for Masters in Environmental Science

Asteroid strikes, pandemics, nuclear wars and climate change: I believe these elements have something in common. All these catastrophes have the power to wipe away human existence from the earth. It was in my sixth grade that I decided to be an environmentalist, as I got introduced to the subject as a part of my academics. The utter nonchalance of public and government authorities to the staring crises around us further intensified the desire in me to explore this domain.

I clearly recall an incident when I was in my eleventh grade. I happened to come across the official video of Michael Jackson’s ‘The Earth Song’. A few minutes later, I found myself in tears. Well, my friends called this a trivial weakness, but I felt something different moaning deep within me. I realized that the very person next to me might be indifferent to what I perceive, or how I interpret indiscriminate cruelty towards nature.

During weekends, I find my neighbours engaged with catastrophic films. Well, I believe this is a kind of morbid obsession that another group of people tends to commercialize. Altogether, I feel the world pacing towards a painful destruction. I also find little connection between this cinematic masochism to what awaits our subsequent generations. As a responsible citizen, I feel helpless as I find hedges mowed over, or rainforests burning to ashes.

My natural obsession with nature, and deep-rooted love for the world’s raw charm further complement my efforts. I wish I had the power to make people wake up from their materialistic slumber to come together and build a more sustainable future. In an effort to empower myself with the ability to show the way, I have decided to pursue a Master’s degree in Environmental Science or Environmental Engineering. I am keen to know the efficiency of existing mechanisms to combat global warming or climate change, and devise further enhancements in the contemporary systems.

Given that I am in the final year of my geography Honours course, I also have a deep interest in atmospheric sciences. So far, my graduation years have been rewarding indeed. The humane aspect in natural aspects of nature amazes me more than anything else. Besides, I have utilized my practical opportunities like academic projects to gain substantial knowledge about the country’s natural resources, and the existing mechanisms to protect the same. To complement my efforts to further bolster these processes, I look forward to acquiring a specialized degree in Environmental Science. Enhancing my core skills along with my organizational and managerial abilities, I wish to embrace a gratifying career in India or abroad.

Presently, I am working on a project for my final year, based on the impact of fossil fuels on the environment. In this project, my aim is to come up with an efficient and eco-friendly strategy to replace fossil fuels in the global industrial sector, gradually embracing natural alternatives. Besides, I have published a paper in an international journal based on my findings, titled ‘Our Planet, Our Responsibilities’. Through this project, I gained significant knowledge on the importance of energy conservation. Besides, it significantly strengthened my communication and presentation skills.

The advanced program that your university offers would significantly enhance my graphical and analytical skills. Besides, I have the prospect of exciting field trips. Considering my love to explore places and learn about their natural resources, I believe it to be the right decision to pursue a course in environmental science. The enriched academic infrastructure at your institution, along with the opportunity to gain knowledge directly from seasoned faculty, would significantly leverage my profile. This program will reinforce my knowledge and interest in the global environment. On completing this course, I will gain the ability to clearly demonstrate the importance of conserving plants and wildlife on the earth, while altering our habits to mitigate carbon footprints on the environment.

As a self-motivated and enthusiastic individual, I believe that my concern for our subsequent generations is the driving force for my career choice. Given that I have attended an international school during my Intermediates, I am confident in my abilities to integrate myself into the progressive academic environment. By transforming my skills, I will be able to fervently contribute to the global efforts of developing a sustainable environment.

Five Blunders to Avoid in Environmental Science Personal Statement Writing

Modifying samples:.

While it is okay to review environmental science personal statement examples to increase your understanding of its structure, it is a grave mistake to modify a sample to suit your case.

Not being specific:

The admission panel is looking for an essay that says how closely you fit into their environmental science program. A case-specific approach in writing is needed.

Sounding too negative:

It is good to balance your negatives and positives but do not dwell too much on the negatives. Even if there are any negatives, try to show how you overcame them.

Cliches in the writing style:

The admission committee is expecting a unique and personalized essay from you, not the kind of cliched environmental science personal statement examples on the internet.

Writing one for all:

If you are applying to multiple universities, you need to present a tailor-made personal statement for each of those. Don’t write a single personal statement in hope of using it for all.

After Nature: A Literary Analysis

An appreciation for nature is instilled within a human being during their beginning years of life. Older generations teach younger generations what they have learned from their experiences in nature as a child despite the constant, ever-changing of the environment. Ever since the mid-twentieth century, the climate has been changing in ways that has the potential to one day threaten the lives of billions. Authors, such as Richard Louv, Jedediah Purdy, and Kalle Lasn, work to emphasize the downward fall that is occurring in society. Along with their opinions, my Mother also gave her input about the world today from a different point of view. She was born in Chandler’s Ford, United Kingdom in 1964 when climate change was beginning to be recognized.

MD Anderson Personal Statement

Clinical medicine and science are inherently inseparable entities. Scientific advances and discoveries will perpetually influence any career in the medical profession. This was an idea I learned early on during my undergraduate education. However, my own interest in science spans further than using it as a means to an end. The process of developing theories and conducting experiments enthralls me. I not only strive to apply scientific findings to treat my future patients, but also hope to gain inspiration from my patients to advance scientific knowledge. I believe the ideal way to apply my interests, and to best serve my community, is as a physician-scientist. The MD Anderson 1st Year Medical Student Program would offer me the opportunities

Pathways Transition Program Personal Statement

A little over two years ago, I started working as a Community Support Individual for Pathways Transition Programs LLC. My primary responsibility is to teach children various coping skills to manage their behavior, I have determined that I want to be able to address the emotions behind the behaviors. My desire is to be able to help the children I work with come to terms with their past histories so they can move on in their lives towards adoption and other positive outcomes. Sometimes, the children are still going through issues such as, on-going traumas, the lost of a parent due to death or incarceration, etc and I would like to develop the skill set to be able to address these issues. I see pursuing my degree through Argosy University as being the next step to take in order to develop a competency in counseling.

Reflective Essay: What I Learned At Rutgers University

When I first arrived at Rutgers University in 2014 as a freshman there was a lot about the school that I did not really know about. I decided it was best to just sign up for as much as I could and find something that I felt the most in tune doing. After looking around I did not find much that intrigued me or drove me intellectually to be my best. Flash-forward one year, I had yet to face any major challenges, more than often found myself slacking-off and lazily going through school. That was the moment I decided I wanted to attempt to conduct research.

Cardiovascular Science Personal Statement Sample

I want to further my study in this course because it is thrilling and rapidly- moving subject area, that is highly pertinent to the problem facing by society today. As far as I concern, cardiovascular disease is one of the popular cause of death. I am keen to learn more and involve in the latest advances in cardiovascular research. Over the years of studying, my interest in this area has increased. Moreover, I found that this course is challenging, rewarding and inspiring topic. How the human body works, repairs itself and can be improved especially related to cardiovascular always make me interested into it. This is why studying cardiovascular science at master level is an ideal choice for me. Being

Interview Narrative Essay

Sitting down in the English Classroom, his dark, thick, curly hair waves like a black sea. As Prashanth sits with his legs parallel to the floor and his mind open to my questions, he recalls his past experiences when he would play the piano, in his house. As his eyes grow stale and his mind wanders off into a long past world, he slowly recollects these great times.

Personal Narrative: Hackett Catholic Prep

With one foot in Seoul and the other in Kalamazoo, I have been juggling two homes for going on seven years. For the first dozen years of my life, home was where I was born and raised—the comfortable Irwon neighborhood in a cozy apartment with my mom and dad. When I first arrived in Michigan, it took nearly a year before I accepted that an entirely new story had begun. Slowly but surely, my aunt and uncle had become substitute parents and my two little cousins were now adopted siblings.

Summary Of South Florida Science Museum: Personal Statement

From a very young age, I’ve always been interested in science and its ability to explain natural phenomena, so naturally, I have been attracted to the South Florida Science Museum since birth. It all started with a “mad scientist” themed birthday party I had at the museum in third grade. I remember being fascinated by the exotic oceanic creatures in the touch tank and the experiments, which I thought were magic (because how else could white powder (baking soda) and a clear liquid (vinegar) make a volcano?). I knew that when I grew up, I wanted to work at the science museum so I could experience this level of joy every day.

Gssm Accomplishments

Though I have had many achievements and disappointments, one thing that I have always been proud of is my ardor for everything that I do. The Governor’s School for Science and Math offers a rigorous path to pursue, but it is the one that I have dedicated myself to for many years. GSSM opens up a myriad of new doors for me; it will provide me with opportunities some people would never even dream of. My lively personality will fit in perfectly with GSSM’s positive environment and, in spite of the necessary sacrifices, the reward far outweighs the cost.

Gregory Mader Personal Statement

“Tell me an issue you are passionate about, and then argue against it,” said Gregory Mader, my father’s employer, and, coincidentally, an alumnus of the University of Chicago, as he gave me a glimpse of the intense critical thinking atmosphere I would experience at the University of Chicago. I was hooked and I began to crave the intellectual diversity the university would offer, as I sought to learn more about it.

Reflective Essay About The Environment

As the result of my experience this semester I can conclude that this experience was a life changing experience. The way I viewed things in the past about the environment has changed. In the past I was not aware of the importance of living a more sustainable life. Also, how protecting our environment is one of the today’s most serious issues. Some of issues and information that I learned throughout this semester was the web life, food web, overpopulation, mutualism & commensalism, climate change, pollution, rainforest & sea destruction, and the extinction of many animals and plants. It was interesting to learn about the cause and prevention of erosion, while doing my EACAP project. I was not aware of the importance of preventing erosion from the trail. I have many take away this semester not only I have learned about current environmental issue, but also the history of it. Now that I know that someday, we can run out of sources I value than more than ever.

Importance Of Environmental Education Essay

Our earth is the most precious gift of the universe. It is the sustenance of ‘nature’ that is the key to the development of the future of mankind. It is the duty and responsibility of each one of us to protect nature. It is here that the understanding of the ‘environment’ comes into the picture. The degradation of our environment is linked with the development process and the ignorance of people about retaining the ecological balance. Indeed, no citizen of the earth can afford to remain aloof from the issue related to the environment. It is therefore, essentially important that the study of the environment becomes an integral part of the education process. Environmental education increases public awareness and knowledge about environmental issues or problems. In doing so, it provides the public with the necessary skills to make informed decisions and take responsible actions.
