This course will help you develop woodworking skills which will be used in the manufacture of different kinds of furniture. You will learn modern and traditional jointing techniques and apply these skills in the creation of a small table with drawer.
What you study
You will learn about the range of joints in furniture manufacture including
- Mortice and tenon.
- Dowel and biscuit.
After the course
Possible articulation onto NQ Furniture or HND Furniture Restoration or Craft.
How the course is taught
Mainly practical based in cabinet workshop. You'll be trained in the safe use of a modern well-equipped workshop.

The National 4 Certificate Practical Woodworking SCQF: level 4 (24 SCQF credit points)
In partnership with Historic Environment Scotland and Forth Valley College, we are working towards introducing the National 4 Practical Woodworking certificate to our benches
The Course aims to offer learners opportunities to develop:
- skills in woodworking techniques
- skills in measuring and marking out timber sections and sheet materials
- safe working practices in workshop environments
- practical creativity and problem-solving skills
- knowledge of sustainability issues in a practical woodworking context
The Course provides opportunities to develop and enhance psychomotor skills, practical creativity, practical problem-solving skills, an appreciation of safe working practices in a workshop environment, and knowledge of sustainability issues in a practical woodworking context.
Course activities also provide opportunities to build self-confidence and to enhance generic and transferable skills in numeracy, employability skills, thinking skills, planning and organising of work tasks, working independently and in collaboration with others, as well as skills in communication and skills in self- and peer-evaluation.
The course will run Wednesday to Friday 10 a.m. to 3.30 p.m.
To be eligible you will need to have been unemployed 6 months or more. We are particularly keen to offer places to people who have been unemployed for 3 years or more.

Woodworking classes
I turn 30 soon and I've given myself a list of things of things to do before the end of the year.
One of them is to make something with my hands. Trouble is I have no experience in doing so. Anyone know of anywhere that does basic woodworking lessons, or a workshop space to rent?
Strathclyde Uni's Centre for Lifelong Learning has an excellent set of workshops with nearly spanking-new equipment, and Graham Murdoch (a master furniture maker) runs daytime and evening classes for beginners

The Strathclyde uni workshop which hosts the classes I mentioned above can be used by experienced woodworkers by paying a membership fee, not sure what hours it's available and the websites a bit crap though

Based in Fairley st, in the south side. Free to come along to on a thursday night and really friendly group. Turn up anytime after 3 and just introduce yourself and people will help you out.

Woodworking · Function and purpose of woodworking joints · Correct setting and adjustment of woodworking hand tools · Correct marking out and manufacture of woodworking joints · Understand the problems of twist, square and wind · Correct method of clamping and gluing frames. · Integrate joints and associated problems (above) into practical models · Manufacture drawers using traditional and modern construction · Preparation of cutting lists · Drawing workshop rods for the production of woodworking projects. · Identification and function of woodworking machines and their component parts · Correct and safe use of woodworking machines · Identification and function of woodworking portable power tools and their component parts · Correct and safe use of woodworking portable power tools · address the following benchmarks for ITE: 1.1.1; 1.1.2; 1.1.4; 2.4.1 · develop the following core skills: Numeracy; Problem Solving Plastics o Vacuum moulding o Types of plastic and uses Engineering · Correct setting, adjustment and use of engineering hand tools. · Correct and accurate marking out methods. · Safe working practices in the use of machinery including guards, electrical and personal hygiene · Correct use of machine tools: * Facing, Parallel and taper turning Knurling, centre drilling, tapping and parting off. · Correct use and types of screw threads · Integrate skills and associated problems into practical models

Choose what you want to learn on one of my bespoke woodworking courses and I'll do my very best to achieve that for you. All my one-on-one courses are held at my workshop in Scotland.
Langholm, Scotland
Bespoke woodworking courses, costing just £200 per day, generally take place on 3 successive days over the summer months and they can be as flexible as you, the participant, need them to be. Accommodation is available in or around Langholm for those travelling from a distance - details available on request. Anywhere within Langholm is only a few minutes walk from the workshop, including food outlets for your packed lunch.

* There is only me - whether that be to design/create or teach - so I can only take a few courses in a year. There just aren't enough hours in the day!

I really enjoyed the day it was great. Daniel is a laid back but really good teacher and I learned loads. It was just what I needed starting out in woodworking.
Daniel’s courses are extremely informative and I have gained lots of knowledge and experience about tools: how to properly look after them, different tools that I hadn’t heard of, and some things I would need to purchase in order to keep my tools in a good condition. The final bespoke course was definitely my favourite when I got to make something I wanted.
I would recommend these courses to anyone who has an interest in woodwork. Daniel was able to spend time with me and no question is a silly one. He is very helpful and encouraging throughout all the courses.
