Group games are ideal for developing critical-thinking skills
The link between critical thinking and one’s education is obvious – you can’t learn well unless you think well.
Critical thinking is the ability to look at problems in new ways, to analyse how parts of a whole interact with one another and to interpret information and draw conclusions.
Critical thinking and problem-solving skills were once thought to be the domain of gifted people. Today, they are necessary for every individual and group who seeks to make sensible decisions about financial, health, civic, workplace and leisure activities.
The solutions to international concerns such as climate change and global warming require highly developed critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. These skills include the ability to effectively analyse and evaluate evidence, arguments, claims and beliefs.
Benefits of Developing Critical-Thinking Abilities
The ability to solve interesting and unfamiliar problems often leads to the development of other skills such as increased engagement, higher concentration levels and improved thought processing.
Here are a few examples of experiences that occur in many programs which may provide you with an opportunity to focus on problem-solving skills:
- Forming a project team to solve an existing, yet complex problem.
- Thinking of a new campaign slogan to broadcast a difficult, yet important message.
- Adopting a rational, analytical and evidence-based approach to investigate a conflict.
- Challenging one of your group’s long-held beliefs or practices.
Naturally, one of the most powerful (not to mention, enjoyable) ways to develop and strengthen your group’s problem-solving skills is to employ the use of fun group games.

Description
This lesson will encourage you to look much deeper at who you are as ad individuals and us as a society. Further thinking about egocentrism and the elements of reasoning we deploy, this activity will help you explore some of your egocentric assumptions and some common situations in life that we take for granted.
1. You are conducting a tour for aliens who are visiting earth and observing humans. You’re all in their spaceship when you happen to fly over a football stadium. One of the aliens is confused, and turns to you for help. Thinking critically, answer these questions as posed by your alien friend:
What is a game, and why do humans play them?
What are “teams” and why are they so important for humans to be part of?
Why is it these games seem to get more attention than other matters on your planet, like disease and poverty?
Why do humans get so emotional and even violent when watching games?
What would happen if no human could ever play these games again?
2. Next, find a friend or family member to pose this same scenario and questions to. Think critically about you both answered the same set of questions. How do your responses compare? How are they different? Do you think egocentrism present? What other impediments do you think may have contributed to the way that you (and your friend) may have answered these questions?
3.(1) What main concepts does the author use to relate to the main issue; (2) What's the point of view of the author? and (3) What are the author's assumptions. Remember to refrain from critiquing the article and instead, demonstrate your critical thinking skills!

It is a form of interaction among people involving a fun experience while adhering to stipulated rules. People play games to maintain physical activity, feel entertained and interact with others. These games are essential in people's mental well-being as they present an opportunity to share ideas and have fun as spectators. What are "teams," and why are they so important for humans to be part of? Teams entail merging diversity whereby people have different skills, abilities, and interests. The diversity allows people to work together and incorporate the various skills and interests to attain favorable outcomes. The idea or skill of others surpasses individual ability, hence th...
