Jobcentre Plus Programmes

Adult job seekers often rely on a range of support services to enable their progression into sustainable employment. This will often require training, whether that be tailored to a specific employment sector or training in wider employability skills.

What are the challenges?

Jobcentre Plus (JCP) will refer adults to you for training, often at short notice in response to an employment opportunity or to participate in a sector-based work academy. Available learning time can be limited on these programmes, which can mean challenges for you in being able to ensure they have the skills to progress.

What are key things required?

Short, Adult Education Budget (AEB) fully funded provision is essential. Whether that be qualifications, units or a bespoke unitised programme with a flexible approach to assessment.

How can we help?

Gateway Qualifications has an extensive range of fully funded AEB provision. The flexibility of assessment encourages a holistic delivery approach rather than linear. Teaching and assessment can be cross referenced across multiple learning aims, ensuring learners can maximise their time with you and their individual learning achievement. Programmes of learning provide co-teaching options generating staff efficiency whilst maximising funding opportunities.

Perfect provision

Providers we work with to run Jobcentre Plus programmes typically include a mixture of the following:

Employability Skills : These will develop skills such as team working, communication skills and personal development as well as how to apply for work and prepare for interviews. These are aimed at giving confidence to Learners and provide employers evidence of the employability skills they demand.

Find out more about our Employability Qualifications

Personal and Social Development : These can cover a range of topics that will give learners the skills they need to thrive in the workplace. These can range from basic personal & social skills, basic employable techniques, ICT skills and/or vocational tasters. This type of provision can be particularly useful to Learners who have not previously achieved in education and would benefit from alternative approaches to curriculum and learning.

Find out more about our Personal and Social Development Qualifications

Vocational Tasters : Learners undertake vocational tasters which can aid a learner that is undecided on a specific career path or sector. They tend to have multiple entry points which allow the delivery to be optimised to accommodate different class sizes and learner routes. Subject areas can range from construction, retail, hospitality and catering, hair & beauty and many others, whatever is required to meet the local job market needs.

Find out more about our Vocational Qualifications

English & Maths : A bite sized approach which will cover skills gaps and embed basic English and Maths skills that may be required for employment. Learners whose first language is not English will benefit from undertaking ESOL qualifications. English, Maths and ESOL tend to be vocationally contextualised to allow for Learners to further build their skills and enable delivery to be cross functional.

What is a sector-based work academy programme (SWAP)

The programme is designed to help jobseekers, who are claiming either Universal Credit, Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), to build confidence, improve job prospects and enhance CVs.

SWAPs last up to six weeks, and consist of three parts:

Participants will continue to receive benefits whilst taking part in a SWAP, and if you need to travel to the employer’s place of work or to where the training is held, you may be able to receive help covering the cost of public transport or appropriate childcare.

The programme is designed to help improve job prospects, help employers fill jobs, as each SWAP is linked to one or more genuine job vacancy. While you’re not guaranteed to get a job from completing a SWAP, it does help you to improve your chances of gaining employment in that sector.

You can find out more information, including eligibility and requirements on the gov.uk website .

Do SWAPs work?

Ashley, Greater Manchester “ I was referred to a SWAP in adult social care by my Work Coach. I had lost my main source of income as a musician due to COVID-19, so had re-think my path to the future. By completing the training, I gained the necessary qualification, and after just the second day of the placement, I knew this was the right job for me. I was delighted when I was offered a full-time position. Now I get to have a really positive impact on people’s lives and give back to the community. This is something I’m very grateful for.”

Is a SWAPs for me?

If you are claiming Universal Credit, JSA or ESA, live in England or Scotland, and are looking for work, then a SWAP could be a great way to find a new job.

SWAPs is available in many different industries, from construction, warehouse and logistics to public sector, hospitality and social care.

If you are interested in taking part in a SWAP, you will need to talk to your work coach, who will discuss with you the kind of opportunities available in your local area and if a SWAP is right for you.

Jobcentre Plus Services for Young People

What is jobcentre plus see how the jobcentre can help young people get jobs, training, work experience and other opportunities., what is jobcentre plus.

Jobcentre Plus is an organisation that helps people in the UK find work. Government-funded, it’s part of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

Where is my local Jobcentre Plus?

There are over 600 Jobcentre Plus offices all over the UK.

All big cities and many towns have one.

Who can use Jobcentre Plus?

If you’re of working age (that means 16+) you can use Jobcentre Plus. Graduates, this includes you! You also need to be looking for work, jobs or paid training.

How can Jobcentre Plus help me find employment?

Jobcentre Plus offers a wide range of resources to help young people into work. Each centre has drop-in facilities where you don’t need to have an appointment.

Ask someone for help

In usual circumstances you can go in any time and speak to an advisor to get help with your job search. You can also make an appointment to speak to an advisor at a time that suits you if you prefer. Things will work slightly differently during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Find jobs and opportunities

In usual circumstances you can search through listings using Jobpoints (touch-screen computers where you can search through job listings). You can also use their computers and free Wi-Fi to apply for jobs during the Coronavirus pandemic you will need to double check what is available.

Universal Jobmatch

The DWP also has its own jobs board (formerly called Universal Jobmatch.)

Once you’ve signed up for a free account you can create a profile, add your CV and your skills, and search for vacancies.

Free training

Many Job Centres also offer free training courses on skills like writing a CV, how to apply for a job, and how to behave in a job interview. They can also help you find Apprenticeships and work experience . Check your local Jobcentre Plus centre and follow them on social media for up to date details.

Financial support

The Job Centre is where you’ll go to apply for various benefits if you need financial support while you look for work. Forget the stigma. There is no shame in accepting support when you have a right and a need to receive it. The two main types of benefit for job seekers are known as Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) and Universal Credit (UC), you can read more about these and the differences here .

Sometimes Jobcentre Plus runs jobs fairs or can give you information about jobs fairs going on locally. A job fair is an event where people looking for work can meet with potential employers. These are particularly useful for young people and those looking for entry-level jobs, but anyone of any age can go along.

Jobcentre plus faqs, can i use jobcentre plus if i have graduated from university.

I feel anxious about going to Jobcentre Plus. Will they judge me?

Jobcentre Plus is there to help you, not judge you. Most of the staff you’ll meet will be kind and understanding, even if they are busy. They understand how hard it can be to find the right job, and many of them have been exactly where you are.

Feeling anxious or nervous is normal, but just remember that THERE IS NO SHAME in struggling to find work. The climate for all jobseekers, and especially young people, is really tough right now. Even the most seasoned professionals have likely been through periods of unemployment or job insecurity.

Going to your Job Centre means you’re actively making an effort to find work – that's a big deal, and it's impressive. So give yourself a big cheer.

What is a Jobcentre Plus Work Coach and what do they do?

Your Work Coach is a member of staff at the Job Centre who supports you to find work. They are the person you’ll see if you make an appointment or attend a drop-in session.

A Work Coach gives advice and helps you overcome difficulties that are stopping you from finding work. They can help with anything from improving your CV to writing better job applications to learning how to use online jobs boards to find suitable vacancies.

Your Work Coach will also advise on what benefits, free training and other support you might be eligible for, and help you to get access to these.

Your Work Coach should be friendly, encouraging and supportive. Their job is to help you, not to judge you.

Can Jobcentre Plus help me start a business?

Yes! If you have an entrepreneurial streak, the New Enterprise Allowance is a scheme which supports to people looking to start (or grow) their own business. You might be eligible if you’re 18+ and receiving Universal Credit, Jobseekers’ Allowance, or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA.) As well as a financial allowance, you’ll also get a mentor who will advise and support you.

If you’re interested in setting up your own business, talk to your Jobcentre Plus Work Coach. They will listen to you talk about your business idea. They will work out if you’re eligible for the New Enterprise Allowance. If you are, they can help you apply.

What is the Jobcentre Plus?

Jobcentre Plus is a government-funded employment agency and social security office that can be found in most cities, whose aim it is to help people of working age find employment in the UK. It was formed when the Employment Service merged with the Benefits Agency and was renamed Jobcentre Plus in 2002. It is a part of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

Jobcentre Plus provides resources to enable job-searchers to find work, through Jobpoints (touch-screen computer terminals), Jobseeker Direct (telephone service) and the Jobcentre Plus website. They offer information about training opportunities for the chronically unemployed. They administer claims for benefits such as Income Support, Incapacity Benefit, and Jobseeker's Allowance (currently being phased out in favour of Universal Credit).

Providing Assistance to the Unemployed

In the past, Jobcentre Plus helped those who were currently employed, as well as the unemployed. Now they only provide assistance to those who are unemployed and claiming benefits, though anyone can search for a job at the Jobcentre Plus website online, touch screen Jobpoints or via Jobseeker Direct. Employers and employment agencies can register their vacancies online by calling Employer Direct. These vacancies will be immediately listed through Jobpoints, Jobseeker Direct, and the Jobcentre Plus website.
