What is healthcare management, and why is it important? ‎

Healthcare management is all of the work involved in ensuring smooth operations of healthcare facilities of all kinds, including hospitals, clinics, drug addiction rehabilitation and treatment centers, and elderly care facilities like nursing homes and hospices. As you might expect, these healthcare professionals have wide-ranging responsibilities, including efficient management of day-to-day healthcare facility operations, ensuring availability and maintenance of medical equipment, developing organizational goals and priorities, determining budgets and billing practices, representing the organization to the public, the media, and other audiences.

The work of healthcare management professionals is of particularly critical importance during a crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic. They must manage healthcare facilities under enormous and unprecedented stress, as they attempt to maintain supply chains of essential equipment like testing kits, ventilators, and personal protective equipment (PPE) for staff such as N-95 masks, gloves, and respirators. They also must determine proper staffing levels and safety procedures to protect both healthcare workers and patients while delivering emergency care. The public relations function of healthcare managers is also of heightened importance to maintain the flow of information about all the measures being taken.

The work of a healthcare management professional is closely linked to healthcare administration, and in fact healthcare managers may take on this role in small practices.. However, in larger organizations healthcare administration is typically a separate job that interfaces more directly with the staff of the facility. An administrator’s responsibilities include the recruiting, hiring, and evaluation of personnel, determining efficient administrative procedures, and working with doctors and nurses to ensure they are able to provide health services effectively.

Thus, healthcare administrators often serve as liaisons between healthcare managers and individual employees who are responsible for actually carrying out the work of the facility. ‎

What types of jobs are available to healthcare management professionals? ‎

If you want to make a difference in people’s lives by ensuring the provision of high-quality health and social services, but don’t want to work directly with patients as a doctor or nurse, pursuing a career in healthcare management is a great opportunity. Access to healthcare is critically important for society at all times but especially during a crisis like COVID-19, and healthcare managers and administrators with strong organizational skills play a vital role in these high-pressure situations to ensure these hospitals and clinics have the resources they need to be effective in their mission.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics , jobs in health services management are projected to increase 18% between 2018 and 2028, much faster than the average for all occupations. This growth is part of a projected boom in demand for healthcare services overall due to an aging population in the U.S., and similar increases can be expected in other countries around the world. And, with an average annual salary of $99,730, working in healthcare management can be a financially as well as morally rewarding career path.

In addition to healthcare managers and healthcare administrators, there are a variety of other more specific jobs that fall under the rubric of healthcare management, including clinical directors, medical records managers, doctor’s office managers, healthcare practice administrators, and more. As COVID-19 has shown us, keeping healthcare facilities functioning during a crisis can be a challenge of life and death importance, and it takes an entire organization of dedicated professionals working together to be successful. ‎

What kind of people are best suited for roles in health care management? ‎

Roles in health care management are best suited for people who would be efficient at running the day-to-day operation of a medical clinical setting, including hospitals, doctors' offices, rehabilitation clinics, and long-term care facilities like nursing homes. Health care management is about knowing the ins and outs of a department and how best to care for the needs of both staff and patients. People interested in patient safety, developing quality protocols, and the economics of health care are best suited for roles in health care management. ‎

How do I know if learning health care management is right for me? ‎

Medical professionals who want to expand their knowledge of how health care systems work are best suited for learning health care management. People interested in learning health care management may have an interest in how the health care marketplace works. This includes learning how pharmaceuticals, health care delivery, and medical technology come together to provide patients the most innovative and cost-effective care possible. ‎

What topics can I study that are related to health care management? ‎

Health care management encompasses topics ranging from patient care to the business of health care. Drug development and drug discovery topics cover the creation, distribution, and commercialization of drugs. If you’re interested in the business side of health care management, topics exploring health care organization can delve into the relationship between health care systems and their overarching organization. You can engage in issues like finding ways to speed up time in the waiting room or ensuring patients can receive treatment closer to home. If your health care team is dealing with mental health concerns brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, you can consider exploring topics related to the management and treatment of anxiety and depression. Topics explaining COVID-19 health and safety protocols can give you the knowledge needed in order to implement these protocols with your team in a health care setting. ‎

What types of places hire people with a background in health care management? ‎

People with a background in health care management work for hospitals, insurance companies, doctors' offices, and clinics to ensure that the business end of health care is operating smoothly and efficiently. Medical organizations may also hire health care delivery specialists to explore ways patients can receive diagnostic testing and treatment at home. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics , the job outlook involving medical and health services managers is projected to increase much faster than average between the years 2019 and 2029. ‎

Learning about healthcare can help to qualify you for a career in an industry that is devoted to helping people. Working in healthcare can be emotionally rewarding. As a healthcare professional, you can make a difference in the lives of patients by helping them through challenging issues and by promoting healthy practices to the general public.

Public health services focus on promoting the health of an entire population. These services might inform and educate the population about health risks, support communities to improve their overall health, use regulatory action to help protect health, and identify health hazards that affect the population. Healthcare can also focus on the diagnosis and treatment of individual patients, rather than an entire population. However, the healthcare and public health sectors often work together. Footnote 6

There is no one healthcare career that is better than another. The best career will be the one that aligns with your personal and professional goals. Different healthcare jobs come with different working environments, educational requirements, growth opportunities, and more.

Empowering bystanders: New free online course teaches lifesaving care

The "until help arrives" course covers five fundamental actions to take in a life-threatening emergency, including compression-only cpr and bleeding control..

N.DP.CPR3.JPG

DICKINSON — Medical emergencies can happen at any time, and often do occur when least expected. The actions taken in the critical moments make a huge difference in a positive outcome that saves life.

The American Red Cross and the American College of Emergency Physicians have teamed up to launch an all new online course called, "Until Help Arrives," which aims to empower bystanders to take action and provide lifesaving care should they be the first on the scene of an emergency.

Each year in the United States, 436,000 people succumb to cardiac arrest, claiming more lives each year than colorectal cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, influenza, pneumonia, auto accidents, HIV, firearms and house fires combined, according to the American College of Emergency Physicians.

If performed immediately, CPR can double or triple the chances of survival, however, a recent survey found that almost half of all U.S. adults are unprepared to render aid during a medical crisis. Four out of five adults surveyed claim that they would be willing to help in an emergency situation had they undertaken a training course.

Enter the novel 90-minute online course, free for all and available from the comfort of one’s home.

The "Until Help Arrives" course covers five fundamental actions that can be taken during a life-threatening emergency, which can help sustain or save a life until emergency services arrive. These five foundational skills, taken together, address the most pressing emergency needs someone is likely to be called upon for help and include compression-only CPR, AED education, choking education, administering naloxone for opioid overdoses, and bleeding control using direct pressure and tourniquets.

Dominick Tolli, senior vice president of training services for the Red Cross, said that in emergency situations, every second counts, and it is essential to take immediate action to provide aid to those in need.

"This course is designed to offer bystanders basic information that gives them confidence to take immediate action when minutes matter,” she said. “These five foundational skills, taken together, address the most pressing emergency needs someone is likely to be called upon for help."

With the right knowledge and training, Tolli believes that anyone can go from bystander to "first responder" during a medical emergency.

This non-certification course is available online for individuals and training providers, and it is recommended for those who need basic knowledge on emergency response, but certification is required for workplace or regulatory requirements.

For more information about the course, or to sign-up, visit www.redcross.org and search for “Until Help Arrives.”

Lowell, MA — A new online training course is designed to introduce Total Worker Health concepts to occupational safety and health professionals.

The Center for the Promotion of Health in the New England Workplace offers the self-paced course, which has three modules. One module outlines work and non-work factors that can influence employee safety, health and well-being, and impact organizations. Another introduces the vital elements of TWH and “explains the importance of leadership commitment to TWH.”

CPH-NEW, a NIOSH Center of Excellence based out of the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, states, “Participants will learn how and when to engage employees when using a TWH approach, as well as provide evidence for the rationale for integrating program elements.” In addition, they’ll learn “simple ways to implement TWH practices within an organization, and also identify tools and resources available for implementing the TWH program.”

Anyone who completes the course can receive a certificate, which can be used for continuing education credits with the Board of Certified Safety Professionals.

Health, Social Care and Nursing (Online Course)

What's it all about?

Diploma title: Health and Social Care

Access to Higher Education courses are designed for students aged 19 or over. If you are aged 18 or under, this course may not be suitable for you. Please contact us on [email protected] or 01752 305300 if you would like any help discussing alternative options.

Would you like to retrain as a health professional? A new nursing career can be within your reach when you study this CAVA Access to Higher Education course at City College Plymouth. All of our Access to HE programmes are suited to students who left school to follow one career path, only to find later in life that you want to retrain, or study a university course.

This Access to HE pathway in health and social care can open the door to nursing degrees in adult, mental health and child nursing, as well as other health-related degrees such as midwifery and paramedicine. Units available in this course include biology, psychology, sociology and health studies.

Please note the College course title is a suggested progression route, you must check with your preferred higher education institution to ensure that this course meets their entry requirements.

Placements, Voluntary Work and Paid Employment

It is essential that you are aware if your university course requires you to have prior experience before applications are made. Health and social cares courses require all applicants to have completed work (paid or voluntary) in a relevant sector. This is a condition of entry onto the course and evidence must be provided at interview.

GCSE equivalences in maths, English and science are no longer part of the Access Diploma. It is up to you if wish to enrol on GCSEs alongside your diploma, if you do not currently hold a recent 9-4 (C+) qualification. Your chosen university may not require its applicants to have GCSE or may be happy with previously achieved qualifications, such as O Level, level 2, etc. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have clarified if enrolling on a GCSE is appropriate for you. If your university course does require you to study at GCSE level you could study alongside your Access Diploma, however you must understand the implications of not achieving your GCSEs. Although it does not affect your achievement of an Access Diploma it may compromise your place at university if you achieve the Access Diploma but do not achieve your GCSEs. Some universities encourage applicants to apply for university without GCSEs and complete equivalences between application and enrolment with the university (again, this is something you have to clarify). Alternatively, you may wish to study your GCSEs the year before or after Access study. GCSE classes are held during the day and in the evening. You will have to apply as a separate course, as well as your Access course, if this is your preference. The national changes in GCSE requirements for mature students are unique to each HEI.

This online only, distance learning course requires students to have already achieved GCSE Maths and English at grade C/4 (and Science for Access to Education for certain courses). Student must be over 19 and be highly motivated, self directed with excellent ICT skills.

Students who would like to apply but find that their qualifications don’t meet the entry criteria are encouraged to contact us on 01752 305300 to discuss a suitable alternative course.

Entry Requirements for International Students

The College welcomes applications from international students, however you are strongly recommended to clarify with your chosen university your responsibilities as an international student. You may be required to complete an IELTS or CEFR recognised equivalent test score exam prior to interview or record IELTS 5.5 on your application. There may also be funding implications relating to your international student status. Please ensure that you are clear of university entry requirements for international students.

In each subject you will be taught a range of units and each unit is assigned a credit value. When you successfully complete a unit you will be awarded a number of credits – these can be graded at pass, merit or distinction, depending on the standard of your work. You will continue to ‘collect’ credits throughout the course. The course is assessed by coursework, assignments, projects and exams.

Suggested progression routes: adult, child and mental health nursing, midwifery, neonatal care and other nursing professionals.

Every effort is made to ensure that the units and credits offered are sufficient for progression routes onto higher education courses, however, specific courses at specific universities may have their own unique admissions requirements.

Please check that the amount of Access credits offered in each subject is relevant for your chosen university course. Once you have enrolled onto a specific Access course units are unable to be amended, so please ensure the course you have selected is appropriate to you. (Our staff are excellent in providing advice and guidance, however, individual university courses may have their own specific requirements – so please check).

Please note City College Plymouth Foundation Degree courses have unique entry requirements for Access students. Please check with our Higher Education team.

The switch to remote classes disrupted higher education during the Covid-19 pandemic. Online courses have the potential to be especially disruptive in health fields, where more of the learning is hands-on and practice-based. Using detailed pre-Covid administrative data from a large, diverse public university, I study how online course delivery can impact student performance in these fields. While grades are similar on average in online courses as compared with in-person courses, grades are difficult to interpret and may not measure actual learning. I find that course pass rates – an outcome of real consequence for students – are 3.9 percentage points lower in online courses. This is especially true among Black and low-income students, for whom pass rates go down by 6.4 and 5.4 percentage points, respectively. The results suggest that the move to online courses may depress graduation rates in health fields, particularly among minority and lower-income students, leading to a less diverse healthcare workforce.
